Weather satellites have been our eyes in the sky, offering a crucial lifeline that helps us prepare for and mitigate the effects of extreme weather events. They play a vital role in forecasting storms, hurricanes, and other natural disasters that can devastate communities and claim lives. Yet, the Trump administration has proposed cuts that will severely impact this critical infrastructure, setting us back almost a decade.

To understand the gravity of these cuts, we must consider the data that weather satellites provide. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), satellite data accounts for approximately 85% of data used in numerical weather prediction models. These models have improved forecasting accuracy by nearly 20% over the past decades, saving countless lives and preventing billions of dollars in damages.

Moreover, with the escalating impacts of climate change, the need for advanced weather prediction is more urgent than ever. The frequency and intensity of extreme weather events are increasing, affecting millions of Americans every year. Without these satellites, our ability to detect and respond to these threats is severely compromised.

The proposed budget cuts threaten to stall technological advancements needed to keep pace with global warming's challenges. Instead of forward-thinking innovation, we face the risk of equipment obsolescence, making the US vulnerable and less prepared compared to other countries investing heavily in climate science and meteorological technology.

This is not only about preserving technology—it's about safeguarding our future. Implementing these cuts is both heartless and shortsighted. By reversing them, Congress can prevent unnecessary loss of life and property, and ensure our nation remains at the forefront of weather science.

We urgently call on Congress to intervene and halt the Trump administration's short-sighted plan. It's time to prioritize the safety and well-being of all Americans by ensuring we lead the charge in weather technology and climate resilience.

Join me in taking a stand. Sign this petition to demand Congress act now to reverse these damaging cuts, preserving our weather satellite programs and securing a safer future for everyone. Together, we can ensure that our country continues to make strides in protecting its citizens from the ever-present threat of extreme weather.
