Putting organic waste in the green bin is a good move...However, switching to fortnightly general waste collection will negatively impact larger families, households with young children, people with multiple pets, hobby farms, and those dealing with medical/bio waste.
This change will create real practical difficulties for these residents. At the same time, our rates keep rising every year with little extra benefit, we've essentially been given a small green bucket just to fill a bigger green one. It feels like a wasteful use of ratepayers’ money.

VicGov required Baw Baw to only provide access to FOGO not to cut general waste in half. Council chose the cheaper option for itself, justified it with an unverifiable statistic, gave residents no meaningful say, and then charged the households who can't cope -those with children, elderly relatives, medical needs, or larger families — an extra annual fee to fix a problem council's own choice created. The people least able to adapt (for reasons entirely outside their control) are the ones paying most for a decision they didn't make and weren't meaningfully asked about.

The decision by the council to collect rubbish every second week is a very poor decision in light of the recent covid-19 pandemic. At least 15 million people died due not masking and poor sanitation and the Baw Baw shire wants to repeat this? The accumulation of festering, decomposing waste, not suitable to be handled sustainably will lead to leptospirosis, salmonella, malaria, cholera and the black plague 2.0. Does the shire want this responsibility on their hands? I would hope we have learned by now germs are meant to be taken seriously

Weekly bin empty is common sense and will prevent dumping of rubbish elsewhere. Ratepayers should decide want they need.

Have you SEEN what a big dog produces in a week? This isn't a lifestyle problem, it's basic hygiene, and I am sick to death of being told to just 'manage better' by people who clearly never had to empty a cat litter tray in their life!! This shows that it is possible to meet the Victorian Government’s FOGO requirements without reducing the frequency of general waste collections.
Keeping weekly red-bin collections while introducing FOGO provides the best outcome for residents. It encourages food waste recycling while maintaining an essential public health service and ensuring households are not disadvantaged.
I respectfully ask Baw Baw Shire Council to consider following the approach taken by Latrobe City and retain weekly red-lid bin collections while continuing to support FOGO.
While I understand the environmental benefits of introducing the FOGO service, I don’t believe reducing the frequency of general waste collections is the right approach. Many households continue to generate waste that cannot be placed in the FOGO or recycling bins, including nappies, incontinence products, sanitary items, pet waste, and other hygiene-related waste. For families with young children, carers, older residents, and people with medical needs, storing this waste for two weeks is simply not practical or hygienic.
