Living with endometriosis was something I never imagined facing. It's a chronic and often debilitating condition that has deeply impacted my life, as well as the lives of many other women in Australia, including Emma Watkins from the Wiggles. Like me, Emma underwent surgery, seven years ago, to alleviate her symptoms. Her journey has brought much-needed awareness to this ailment, but the reality remains: we need a definitive cure.

Endometriosis affects approximately one in nine women in Australia, according to Endometriosis Australia. It causes a range of severe symptoms, including pelvic pain, heavy and painful periods, pain with bowel movements, painful urination, pain during sexual intercourse, and sadly, infertility. Despite these grave effects, research progress into understanding and treating this condition has been slow.

We call upon the scientific community in Australia to expedite research efforts into endometriosis treatments. Prioritising this research can significantly improve the quality of life for many women who suffer in silence. Enhanced funding and resources are crucial in discovering a permanent cure, allowing women to lead pain-free lives and achieve their dreams of motherhood.

Evidence shows that strong investments in medical research can lead to breakthroughs — much like the advances we've seen in other medical fields. Enhanced research will not only alleviate the pain endured by countless women but will also aid in developing innovative treatments that could eliminate the need for repeated surgeries and diminish the risk of recurrence.

We urge policymakers, researchers, and medical professionals to recognise endometriosis as a priority area. Together, we can ensure that future generations of women need not suffer as we have.
