Though DeviantArt aims to modernize its features and offer more powerful seller tools through its Studio, the phasing out of commissions is a significant blow to the artistic community that depends heavily on it for income and opportunities.

The timeline announced for this change is unsettling: on May 1, 2026, new commission listings will no longer be possible; then by July 1, 2026, commissions will be entirely removed from DeviantArt. Despite being labeled "outdated," the commissions feature remains vital for many artists who rely on it for engaging with clients and fulfilling personalized art requests.

DeviantArt has promised that there are other modern tools like DeviantArt Originals to facilitate art sales and creations, but these alternatives do not fully meet the unique and personalized needs that commissions fulfill. Commissions have been a core part of how many artists, including myself, build and maintain relationships with our audience. They help foster creativity, allow us to work on diverse projects, and importantly, provide a steady income stream.

By removing an essential feature like commissions, DeviantArt risks alienating its dedicated artist community who have long supported and been part of the platform’s identity. For many of us, commissions aren't just about selling art but sharing our passion and creativity in a way that connects directly with our clients on a personal level.

I urge DeviantArt to reconsider this decision and bring back the commissions feature. This feature is critical not only for maintaining loyalty among current artists but also for attracting new artists to the platform. Given these compelling reasons, it's clear that keeping the commissions feature aligns with the creative and financial needs of artists and the growth objectives of DeviantArt itself.
