When you think of the 1971 classic film "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," you might imagine a whimsical and fantastical chocolate wonderland. Yet, the reality behind the scenes was far from magical. I was inspired to start this petition after reading about Michael Bollner's harrowing experience while filming the famous "chocolate river" scene as Augustus Gloop. In his 2021 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bollner revealed that the river was not chocolate, but rather a dark, foul-smelling concoction of food coloring, cream, and 15,000 gallons of water that became rancid under the hot set lights. He had to jump into that water repeatedly, despite it being just 15 centimeters deep—an experience that left him fearing he would hit his head on the riverbed.

Moreover, the filming conditions seemed far from the vibrant and edible set audiences believed in. While one-third of the set was indeed edible, Wilder, who played Willy Wonka, disclosed that the cup he bit was made of wax. He had to repetitively spit out pieces after each take. Even more revealing is the fact that the young actors were kept from viewing the Chocolate Room set until the actual filming to capture their real first reactions, a tactic that speaks volumes about the behind-the-scenes dynamics.

This lack of transparency about the true environment in which the film was made is concerning, especially given how this film has shaped the childhoods of millions. We owe it to the cast, crew, and audiences to shed light on the facts behind this beloved movie. It’s a part of film history that deserves to be accurately acknowledged.
