Currently, OpenAI is advancing a biodefense program aimed at combating future pandemics through AI. At first glance, this seems like a promising and proactive approach. However, when we consider the capabilities and accomplishments of scientists over hundreds of years, who have managed disease control and vaccine development effectively without AI, we must question if this path is necessary—or even prudent.

Throughout history, scientists have demonstrated their expertise and proficiency by developing vaccines and tackling pandemics without the need for AI intervention. They have achieved tremendous milestones through rigorous research, collaboration, and perseverance. Introducing AI into this domain could undermine their expertise and possibly introduce unknown vulnerabilities.

Fighting pandemics requires profound understanding, experience, and a careful approach to public health, all of which humans have cultivated meticulously over centuries. AI, though powerful, lacks the nuanced understanding humans bring to the table and risks oversimplifying complex biological challenges.

Rather than relying on AI for biodefense, we should encourage resources to be redirected towards supporting scientific research, enhancing laboratory facilities, and increasing global collaboration among scientists. By doing so, we can ensure that human brilliance in medical science continues to flourish uninhibited and sustainable practices are at the forefront.
