When it comes to education, one size doesn’t fit all. I'm writing this petition because my little brother is 13 years old, and he and kids his age are too young to be introduced to religious texts like the Bible in public schools. Personally, I've never had a religion in my life and never desired to read the Bible or become religious. I believe in allowing young people the time and space to form their own beliefs, free from the pressure of institutionalized religious education.

The introduction of Bible sessions in Texas public schools could have unintended consequences. Many children and their families may not share the same religious beliefs, and it is crucial to respect and honor these diverse perspectives. The separation of church and state is a foundational principle that ensures public schools remain inclusive spaces where all students, regardless of belief, feel welcome and supported.

Research has shown that teaching religion in schools can lead to issues such as religious intolerance and division among students. A study from the American Psychological Association indicates that exposure to various religious ideologies at a young age can sometimes foster confusion and breed social tensions rather than understanding. The focus of public school education should be on subjects that unite rather than divide — subjects like science, math, literature, and history that provide students with a broad understanding of the world.

Additionally, parents have the primary role in educating their children about sensitive topics, including religion. For many, religion is a deeply personal journey best navigated in the family setting, where values and beliefs can be shared in accordance with familial cultures and traditions.

By cancelling Bible sessions in public schools starting in 2030, we prioritize a secular educational environment that respects all faiths and beliefs. We ask the Texas Education Agency and local school districts to redirect resources towards educational programs that promote diversity, inclusivity, and critical thinking. Let us keep our public schools a place for growth and open-minded exploration rather than compulsory religious instruction.
