  • Ban โ€˜Pro-Lifeโ€™ Society at Liverpool John Moores University & University of Liverpool: The petition is initiated by a student from LJMU who is concerned about the existence of a โ€˜Pro-lifeโ€™ society, which is also associated with the University of Liverpool.   • Demand Better Awareness and Disclosure About SUDEP Risks to Epilepsy Patients: Esther Brenda McLaughlin has started a petition following the tragic loss of her son, John Paul, to SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy). She says that the medical community failed to inform them about the risk of SUDEP during her sonโ€™s 17-year struggle with epilepsy. Shortlink: change.org/SUDEPAwarenessAndDisclosure (70 signatures)
  • Demand an Immediate Ban on E-Scooters in Greater London: Highlights the growing concern over the increased prevalence of e-scooters in the capital, which has led to a rise in accidents, including serious injuries involving both riders and pedestrians.   • Stop the Jurassic Coast waste incinerator: Against a new facility in Dorset which will burn waste 24 hours a day. The controversial project has been approved by the Labour Government despite opposition from the local council. Shortlink: change.org/StopPortlandIncinerator (1,400 signatures)

  • Prohibit MPs from Receiving Personal Gifts and Donations: In the wake of the Labour donor scandal, this petition calls for an immediate ban on MPs receiving personal gifts or donations, arguing that such practices undermine the integrity of democracy.   • Chancellor, You Must Protect Older People In Your October Budget: Calls for the reinstatement of a universal winter fuel payment for all older people with modest incomes.   • Deepfake sexual abuse is not โ€˜pornโ€™. Demand action to stop image-based abuse: This is a call to action against the creation and sharing of sexually explicit deepfake images, which has caused immense suffering to countless women and girls, including the petitioner, Jodie, who shares her personal experience.   • To call for licensing and legislation for the breeding and keeping of foxes: Highlights the issue of foxes being exploited in the exotic pet trade, with cubs as young as four weeks old being sold without any consideration for their welfare.   • Anyone with a history of stalking/criminal damage to be mandatory to report to new partners: The petitioners, themselves victims of stalking and harassment, are advocating for legal reforms, specifically a law that mandates the disclosure of stalking/harassment and criminal damage offences to new partners of perpetrators. From child abuse to acid attacks: trending UK petitions on Change.org (19th September 2024)

Huw Edwardsโ€™ conviction โ€“ and subsequent light sentencing โ€“ for child sex offences incited a whole host of petitions on the platform this week, including child abuse survivors coming forward to share their stories and call for justice to be better served on behalf of victims.

Also still of public interest are MP incomes and spending habits, with thousands of new signatures added to petitions calling for MPs to be means-tested and their second jobs reviewed and regulated.ย

โ€œAs a survivor of abuse, I am confronted with the trauma every day. To see that individuals like Huw Edwards receive only minimal consequences for heinous actions adds insult to injury.โ€ This is โ€˜J Sโ€™ story and, like most people, J S wants to see justice served with a stricter sentence for Huw Edwards for his child pornography distribution. As the Winter Fuel Payment cuts debates rage on, Silver Voices โ€“ a membership organisation for senior citizens โ€“ have launched a petition demanding the Chancellor to protect older people in the October Budget. Details here (11k signatures)

CRIMINAL JUSTICE

Wellingborough local, Sophy Zakharchenko, suffered a horrific attack with an unknown liquid substance which left her with both physical and emotional scars. Today she is campaigning for more to be done to halt the rising trend of liquid attacks in her hometown and beyond. Details here (110 signatures)

HEALTH

Judith Timmins lost her grandson, Max, at just 13 months old earlier this year. The tragedy has now been compounded with the prospect of an 8-10 month wait for the post-mortem results, due to a severe shortage of paediatric pathologists in the UK. Judith wants the authorities to โ€œaddress this critical shortage urgently by increasing recruitment and training for paediatric pathologistsโ€. Details here (110 signatures)

OTHER

Encouraged by the Church of Englandโ€™s actions towards addressing its historic involvement in slavery, two of the granddaughters of W.D. Ross โ€“ Former Vice Chancellor of Oxford University โ€“ have launched a petition on Change.org calling for a greater commitment from Oxford University towards playing a major role in the reparatory justice movement. TOPICAL

Sarah K was abused by a paedophile at the age of seven. She is appalled by the flaw in the legal system โ€“ which โ€œworks in favour of the perpetrators and most certainly not the victimsโ€ โ€“ that allows paedophiles to roam freely after a guilty plea, while the victim waits months for sentencing. Over 90,000 people have now signed Yvonne Keeganโ€™s petition calling for a reduction in MP expenses and using the excess to fund Winter Fuel Allowance benefits for pensioners. Details here (91k signatures)

Unfair dynamic ticket pricing for music events is still on the hearts and minds of the British public. Over 60,000 people have now signed a petition calling for an outright ban on dynamic ticket pricing in the entertainment industry. Details here (66k signatures)

POLITICS

From heating allowances to clothing budgets, the public wants full accountability from the people that are supposed to represent them. Sue Turnerโ€™s petition to review the second jobs of MPs has gained new traction this week in light of recent events in the Labour government, with over 50,000 people lending their support. OTHER

Paul Ridley is calling for an independent complaints commission for Social Care, Health & Education. He writes: โ€œAs a parent of a non-verbal autistic son and along with countless others, I have fallen victim to ill-judged decisions made by Local Authorities (LAs). These decisions greatly impact the health and wellbeing of our beloved children and without the financial ability to resort to courts or legal aid, our only recourse is to the Local Government Ombudsman (LGO). Lots of calls for justice in this weekโ€™s edition, ranging from the NHS mesh implant scandal to elderly deaths. On Tuesday 10th September a House of Commons vote confirmed that the Government would press ahead with plans to means-test the Winter Fuel Allowance benefit for pensioners. Following the vote, a number of Change.org users have independently started petitions calling for reform of the MPโ€™s expenses system. Details here (7 petitions / 800+ signatures)

CRIMINAL JUSTICE

On 23 February 2016, four demolition workers were killed when a part of the boiler house at the Didcot A Power Station collapsed. It would take almost seven months to recover three of the four bodies. Eight and a half years later, the investigation remains ongoing and unresolved. Petitions starter, Mark Anthony, is calling for justice for the families involved. Details here (600 signatures)

For the past three years Jess Adams and her partner have been stalked by her ex-partner, resulting in โ€œa psychological upheaval that has drastically impacted our daily livesโ€. Jess says the terror associated with this ongoing nightmare is something no one should experience and is calling for urgent legal reforms so that it becomes mandatory to report to new partners anyone with a history of stalking or criminal damage. HEALTHCARE / NHS

Patricia Conlon underwent an NHS mesh implant procedure in 2002, assured of its safety and efficiency. That procedure left her unable to walk, do housework, socialise, or even interact with her grandchildren for 22 years. Patricia wants justice for herself and the thousands of other women that got caught up in the NHS mesh implant scandal. Details here (700 signatures)

After losing her elderly mother to hospital negligence, Tee Stead is calling for transparency around elderly deaths in hospitals to stop more innocent lives being lost to โ€œa system characterised by apathy and incompetenceโ€. Details here (190 signatures)

TOPICAL

Dr Vish Rasiah passed away in April 2020, having caught COVID on duty in the early stages of the pandemic, leaving behind his 6-year-old daughter, Katelyn and wife Liza, a paediatrician. The devastating experience led to Lizaโ€™s mother, Zohora, moving from Trinidad to help Katelyn and Liza with the bereavement and child care. Zohora, previously told by the Home Office that she could apply to extend her leave in 2023, has been told she must leave the country. The family have launched a petition to reverse the decision in order to keep the family unit together. Details here (3,000 signatures)

HEALTHCARE / NHS

Jessica Anne Powell is calling for an extension of the NHS vouchers coverage to include lens thinning for children with high prescription glasses following her 4-year-old daughterโ€™s diagnosis of Myopia and astigmatism in both eyes. Details here (28k signatures)

The Filo Project, a not-for-profit organisation that supports people living with dementia in the community, are calling for changes to VAT to ensure families affected by dementia can afford the care they need. Details here (5k signatures)

After a change of school meals contract at her daughterโ€™s school, Alessandra Millar launched a campaign in June for increased funding for Universal Infant Free School Meal, in line with the rising costs of food. The campaign is gaining new traction with over 4,000 people signing this week. Details here (18k signatures)

TRANSPORT

Bolton resident Stephanie Williams has launched a new petition on Change.org urging authorities to urgently raise the height of the barriers to the motorway bridges at Four Lane Ends to prevent further tragedies and improve overall safety. Details here (10k signatures)

The government has recently failed to rule out scrapping the 25% Council Tax discount for single people, despite the Labour Party pledging at the last election not to raise Council Tax. PUBLIC SAFETY

After being spiked twice at a recent festival, Catherine Evans is campaigning for better safety measures at music festivals to prevent spikings and other dangerous incidents. Details here (68 signatures)

ENVIRONMENT

Villagers of Shedfield, Curdridge, Wickham and Botley have rallied to create a petition opposing the proposed expansion of the Silverlake car recycling facility which will require building over and destroying a large field, currently used for food farming. Details here (186 signatures)

QUIRKY

Following the Walthamstow revolt over Gailโ€™s bakery opening in the East London village, a family bakery in Swaffham has launched a petition to stop Greggs from โ€œcrushingโ€ their livelihood! Almost 500 locals have signed the petition so far. Details here (449 signatures)

TOPICAL

Over 2,000 people have signed a petition to stop the introduction of โ€˜Pay-Per-Mileโ€™ Vehicle Tax Bands, following recent proposals put forward by the government. The proposals, the petition claims, โ€œstrike at the heart of hardworking caregivers, delivery drivers, and businesses across the UKโ€. Details here (2k signatures)

HEALTH

The UK Sepsis Trust has launched a petition on Change.org urging the NHS to prioritise sepsis as urgently as heart attacks and strokes. The petition, which has gained over 2,000 signatures in just a few days, argues that sepsis is just as life-threatening and kills more people globally than cancer, but yet it does not receive the same priority as heart attacks or strokes within the NHS. The Childrenโ€™s Alliance are calling for the government to tax big tech and junk food in order to fund childrenโ€™s health & wellbeing. Details here (17k signatures)

TRANSPORT

Ian Sweetlandโ€™s 2023 petition to make the national concessionary bus pass UK-wide has picked up fresh momentum this week with over 5,000 new people adding their signatures to the campaign. This now brings the total signatures to 284,000 and counting. Details here (284k signatures)

ENVIRONMENT

Katie Teakle is calling for better environmental stewardship from North East Lincolnshireย  Council, asking them to abandon harmful pesticides in favour of non-chemical alternatives that put nature and public health first. Over 25,000 people have signed the petition. Details here (25k signatures)

Louise lost her son, Rome, to stillbirth in 2023. Her tragic experience has led her to launch a campaign to mandate better stillbirth care in all hospitals. Details here (570 signatures)

QUIRKY

A Hove property owner has been hit with an enforcement notice from the Council to replace the โ€œpainstakingly selected handcrafted clay tilesโ€ he installed on the roof of his revamped property that had previously been โ€œneglectfully left to deteriorateโ€. Details here (80 signatures)

A bereaved father who has been campaigning for a dedicated 3-digit mental health emergency number for over a year, following the death of his son by suicide, has been critical of NHS 111โ€™s recent announcement of its new mental health service line, which is accessed by pressing โ€˜2โ€™ after calling 111. Alanโ€™s petition has been signed by almost 200,000 people. Details here (196k signatures)

POLITICS

Thousands have signed a petition to โ€œredeploy and end unjust destitutionโ€ for immigrants due to sponsor licence revocations. The petition, started by Tendayi who, along with his wife and three children, cared for a displaced family of five in their home, is calling for the government to recognise the plight of โ€œhardworking, law-abiding individualsโ€ who legally migrated to the UK but yet find themselves displaced due to sponsorship licence revocations. ENVIRONMENT

ExxonMobil are planning to build a massive pipeline across the Isle of Wight to permanently bury captured carbon dioxide at sea. Over 25,000 people have added their signature to oppose this pipeline. Details here (25k signatures)

HEALTH

According to Dawn, pharmacists need to be allowed to prescribe medication for minor ailments, thus taking the pressure off doctors and hospitals and reducing the cost to taxpayers. Over 30,000 people agree with her. Details here (31k signatures)

HUMAN RIGHTS

A group of SEND students from Hive College in Birmingham launched a petition to campaign for UK supermarkets to have mandatory wheelchair accessible tills and self-service checkouts. Signatures are fast growing on this daily. Details here (38k signatures)

Mandatory retrials to blocking Amazon warehouse plans: trending UK petitions on Change.org (22nd August 2024)

Our biggest covered petition from last week was a local campaign calling for Gailโ€™s, the high end bakery chain, to be prevented from opening a store in Walthamstow, north-east London. Over 18 national media outlets picked up this story.ย

With much of the UK still in a state of unrest, Change.org users are responding with petitions ranging from demanding accountability from social media platforms for the riots, to calling for the resignation of key figures in the police force, and setting up a law to offer better protection to childcare facilities following the Southport murders.

Our largest petition so far, started by โ€˜JPโ€™ from Liverpool, is calling for the English Defence League to be designated a terrorist group. This petition has reached 200,000 signatures and counting in less than a week.
