Review the Second Jobs of MP’s.

Review the Second Jobs of MP’s.

The Issue

MP’s are currently allowed to have second jobs, as long as they are not ministers. Having a second job could be seen as advantageous to being an MP, it enables MP’s to draw upon different experiences and generalise  skills to their new role. It is also notable that many MP’s returned to previous roles in public services to help support the country during the Covid-19 pandemic. Most MPs in second jobs have been able to adapt their hours to create an occupational balance that allows them to also dedicate their time to being present for their constituents.  There are, however,  a number of MPs who continue to have very lucrative roles including consultants/advisors to private companies which impact on the time they have available to represent their constituents. At times this can involve working remotely, away from their constituency.  It concerns me that some MP’s appear to be prioritising their second jobs/roles over that of being an MP, resulting in a lack of ‘presence’ and availability to meet the needs of their constituents.

Constituents expect their MP’s to be fully committed to the role they put themselves forward for -to represent their constituents views. This will not happen if MP’s are permitted to engage in additional employment opportunities that take them away from their constituency.

Now, with a new government in place - is the time to review the working policies of MP’s, to ensure they fully represent the people within their constituency. Stop MP’s juggling their parliamentary commitments around opportunities for further financial gain. Please sign the petition to ensure your MP is fully committed to their role in representing you.  Shouldn’t being an MP be a full-time job?
