Extend the Time Limit for Reviewing Sexual Assault Cases

The Issue

In the years between 2018-2020, I was the victim of sexual assault.

In 2022, I had been out with my friends drinking and I had been picked up by my father. It was only then I had admitted to him about what had happened. He then told my mom in which my mom made the initial call to the police. If my mom hadn't helped me, I'd have never had the courage to go myself since it is a tricky decision for anyone to do.

I took the path to seeking justice and reported all the events to the police. As is for many people this is a brave and difficult step to take.

Following this, earlier this year, I sought a review of my own sexual assault case.

However, I was informed that it was too late to do so because I was outside the 3 month window. This is such a ridiculous and unfair rule to have, there shouldn’t be a time frame.

This is an experience shared by many survivors of sexual assault who are often unable to seek justice due to restrictive time limits on reviews.

According to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), only 230 out of every 1,000 sexual assaults are reported to police and even fewer result in convictions.

The time limit on reviews adds another layer of difficulty for survivors seeking justice. We must extend the time limit for reviewing these cases and give victims a fair chance at justice.

Even better, we can get rid of this 3 month window, and hope that we can ensure we have as much time as we need for this.
