Abolish the TV Licence Fee in Light of Media Revenue Generation

The Issue

I, like many others, feel threatened by the current TV licence system. Despite not watching any live programmes, we are still obligated to pay this fee. This is a personal concern for me and countless others who share this experience.

The media industry is already generating substantial revenue from various sources such as advertising and subscriptions. According to Statista, global television advertising revenue alone was estimated at 136 billion U.S dollars in 2020 (source: Statista). It's clear that the industry has other significant income streams aside from our licence fees.

Moreover, with the rise of digital platforms and on-demand services, traditional television viewing habits have significantly changed. Many people now prefer these platforms over live broadcasts which makes the TV licence fee seem outdated and unnecessary.

Therefore, it's time to reconsider whether a TV licence fee is still relevant in today's digital age where media companies are already making considerable profits from other sources. We urge our government to abolish this outdated system that places an unfair burden on individuals who do not even consume live broadcasts.
