Nationalise South West Water

Nationalise South West Water
The Issue
The privatisation of South West Water has failed and it is no longer fit for purpose.
South West Water (SWW) has been rated as among the worst water companies in England for water pollution as the people of Brixham and the surrounding areas found out after a parasite (cryptosporidium) was let into the water supply due to poor maintenance effecting & infected 1000's of residents.
The company was given two stars, out of a possible four, in the annual Environmental Performance Assessment report, external for 2022. All this while we pay the highest water rates in the country!
It found SWW assets were involved in a total of 108 pollution incidents in 2022, down from 151 in 2021.
In 2022, two of the pollution incidents were deemed to be serious - one relating to a foul sewer and another to a rising main - down from eight in 2021.
SWW self-reported 78% of pollution incidents in 2022, up from 68% in 2021, according to the report.
We have had to endure the worst droughts in decades and hosepipe bans are enforced while holiday makers are free to use.
South West Water owner Pennon Group is increasing its dividends by almost 11% to £112 million, despite facing an Ofwat probe into leaks meaning that £112 Million that could have gone back into the infrastructure rather than lining the pockets of the already wealthy while the working class burden more costs.
We call for the government to nationalise South West Water. Greedy, profiteering companies are abusing this vital natural resource to make record profits, money that could be reinvested into upgrading our infrastructure to a modern standard.
This crisis has spiralled out of control, causing enormous environmental harm, huge damage to tourism and coastal economies and risking public health. Enough is enough.
