Permanent revocation of licence for dangerous drivers causing death or serious injury.
The Issue
I am the victim of a dangerous driver . I was struck by a motorist traveling at three times the speed limit. My life was thrown into chaos, I was left in a coma with a severe traumatic brain injury alongside multiple broken bones. Prior to the incident I was in perfect health; after multiple brain surgeries I am now certified blind, have acquired hydrocephalus, epilepsy and mobility issues. The offender had only just been given his license back when the incident occurred after losing it previously for drug-related offences. When he is released from prison he will once again be allowed the opportunity to gain a driving licence.
The current legislation is inadequate in ensuring that dangerous drivers are taken off the road permanently. According to the Association for Safe International Road Travel, nearly 1.25 million people die in road crashes each year, on average that's 3,287 deaths a day. A disheartening number of these deaths are caused by reckless drivers who are all too often allowed to drive again.
This current law does a great disservice to victims like me, and those lost to traffic incidents. We demand that drivers who cause severe injuries or death due to their reckless driving habits must have their licenses permanently revoked. Doing so will not only help ensure justice for victims and their families, but it will also act as a significant deterrent for dangerous driving behavior. Standards must be upheld to guarantee that individuals unfit for the responsibility of driving are not allowed access to it.
This is not only about justice; it's about preventing future anguish. If someone's driving has resulted in serious injury or death, they should not be allowed to place other innocent lives at risk. We need your support to enforce change. Please sign this petition to stand for a safer, fairer future on our roads.
