Ensure Equal Access to Professional Help for Victims and Offenders

Ensure Equal Access to Professional Help for Victims and Offenders

The Issue

I am a survivor of domestic violence, and my experience has exposed a glaring flaw in our justice system. While the offender was provided with professional assistance such as legal representation, guidance and therapy, I, the victim, was left to navigate this traumatic situation on my own. Even after all the abuse I endured, he was still accommodated for everything he wanted and needed. This is not just my story; it's the reality for many victims who are left feeling unsupported by a system that seems more invested in rehabilitating offenders than aiding those they have harmed. I feel like I have got 0 justice.

Statistics for the UK say 1 in 5 adults experience Domestic Abuse during their lifetime. This equates to: 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6-7 men. Last year 2.4 million adults were victims (1.7 million women and 699,000 men) Yet despite these staggering numbers, there is no mandated provision of support services for victims comparable to what offenders receive.

This petition aims to change that. We call upon lawmakers to enact legislation ensuring that victims receive equal access to professional help - including legal guidance, representation and counseling - as their offenders do. It's time we shift our focus from solely rehabilitating offenders to also supporting survivors.

The trauma inflicted by domestic violence should not be compounded by a lack of support from our justice system. Please sign this petition today if you believe in equal access to professional help for both victims and offenders.
