The global pandemic drastically altered the fabric of the film industry, especially the theatrical release windows, shrinking them to accommodate the immediate demands of streaming services. The magic of cinema thrives on the big screen experience, a communal joy that has been the cornerstone of the film industry for decades. Yet, recent shifts have decimated this window, potentially harming movie theatres around the world.

Universal Studios' innovative decision to extend their theatrical release windows to 5 weeks this year and 7 weeks next year is a pioneering move, signaling the possibility of a renaissance for cinema lovers everywhere. This strategy grants movies the time to breathe, capturing audience attention as word of mouth gradually builds, ultimately rewarding theatre exhibitors who have long supported the cinematic arts.

Imagine the joy and anticipation of returning to a bustling theatre, the aroma of freshly popped popcorn, and the collective gasp of an audience fully immersed in a shared experience. To reclaim these moments truly is dependent on the major American studios—Disney, Sony, Paramount, Amazon, Warner Bros., and MGM—following in Universal's footsteps. Such a move ensures vibrant success and continuity for filmmakers and exhibitors alike.

There is a proven path to success, and it simply requires the collaboration and commitment of the remaining powerhouses. By committing to longer theatrical windows, these studios would not only revive the theatre-going experience but also entice movie-goers back to theatres, supporting local economies and breathing life back into the communities that rely on these venues for employment and entertainment.

We urge these remaining giants to honor their legacy, to invest in the future of cinema and to ensure that the magical moments of film viewing are steadfastly preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Sign our petition to show your support for extending theatrical release windows among all major American studios and ensure the enduring magic of watching movies in theatres remains a cherished cultural activity.
