In 2025, the United States saw the dissolution of a pivotal institution in public broadcasting—the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). Its closure marked the end of an era in which millions of Americans had access to non-commercial, high-quality educational and cultural content. This significant loss has impacted how information is shared and received across the nation.

The CPB, established by the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, played a fundamental role in supporting public broadcasting. It provided Americans with the tools to discern fact from fiction, offering insights into cultural, educational, and current events. By ensuring universal access to these exceptional resources, the CPB contributed to a more informed and educated public, a necessity in times when misinformation can easily mislead.

Since August 2025, after the announcement of its ceasing operations due to the end of U.S. federal government funding, we have witnessed a growing void in public broadcasting. Although a small team was left to manage the remaining obligations and fiscal distributions up until January 2026, the flow of unbiased information crucial to educating the public has been severely compromised.

Reviving the CPB would ensure that American citizens can have access to trustworthy and high-caliber content that distinguishes right from wrong, even in a world where misinformation, including political rhetoric, can be manipulative. With public trust in media sources diminishing, there is a compelling need for the accurate and reliable broadcasting that CPB once provided.

We urge PBS to reinstate funding for the CPB, revive its operations, and restore its commitment to public broadcasting. Investing in this quality content isn’t just about bringing back a federal entity; it is about re-establishing faith in information that guides societal awareness and understanding. Its revival would serve as a beacon of integrity in public media.
