In 1991, Disneyland made a Christmas stage show with colorful characters, festive music, and fourth wall breakages. That stage show was called Mickey’s Nutcracker, and it was performed at the Fantasyland Theatre, formerly known as Videopolis. In 1992, a televised version of the stage show aired on Disney Channel with added special effects. Clips of the show were seen in the 1992 VHS The Magic of Christmas at Disneyland.

The synopsis of the stage show was similar to the original Nutcracker story but with cartoonish humor. It starred Minnie Mouse as the main character, Mickey Mouse as the Nutcracker, Pluto, and Goofy as the background characters. It also starred Roger Rabbit, Chip and Dale, and Tigger from the Winnie the Pooh franchise. Many people are wondering why Donald Duck wasn’t in the stage show. Either he joined the Three Caballeros for Nochebuena or he was too hot-headed to participate. The songs were based on Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite with a cartoonishly comedic twist. Just like the original story, the stage show had toys coming to life, the Rat King, and of course Candyland.

Disney is known for telling stories in their own unique way. Maybe reviving Mickey’s Nutcracker for the modern era would be more unique. There are possibilities for the revival to be done like adding Donald and Daisy Duck as the supporting characters, rearranging Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker suite songs with pop music, and adding more humor than the 90s version. Hopefully, this revival will pay tribute to Mickey and Minnie’s old voice actors Wayne Allwine and Russi Taylor. We can also hope that it’s televised like the 90s version.
