In October 2025, John Franklin, representing Film is Fabulous!, a charitable trust devoted to preserving film collections across the UK, shared promising news that a private collector had significant film materials. Among these treasures was a sought-after missing episode of the iconic series Doctor Who. The collector graciously agreed to catalog and scan his collection, marking a potential landmark moment for Doctor Who enthusiasts everywhere. Unfortunately, fate intervened, and the collector fell ill and tragically passed away before the process could be completed. Now, Film is Fabulous! finds itself navigating complex legal challenges, appealing to the court to ensure the estate executor upholds the original agreement, so these rare episodes can once again see the light of day.

The BBC has long been a beloved custodian of this legendary sci-fi series, and its rich history remains incomplete with 97 episodes from the classic seasons still missing. In light of these new developments, Film is Fabulous! is urging the BBC to renew and intensify their efforts in locating these lost treasures, especially given the proximity of a breakthrough that was so near before tragedy struck.

There have been whispers and rumors of private collections across the UK, where up to 7-12 of these missing episodes might be tucked away, forgotten by time yet crucial to the Doctor Who legacy. These stories and episodes hold immense cultural value, not just to fervent fans but to British television history.

We implore the BBC to bolster its search efforts, collaborate more rigorously with private collectors, and engage in open dialogues with archival organizations like Film is Fabulous! to unearth these missing episodes. With advancements in technology and restoration techniques, bringing these episodes back to life has never been more feasible.

Sign this petition to urge the BBC to commit to resolving this decades-long mystery and enrich the Doctor Who narrative for future generations.
