As most of you don't know, the Time Machine had a BBC production teleplay in 1949 starring Russell Napier as The Time Travel and Mary Donn as Weena. Unfortunately, as broadcast television was newly created, it was never recorded, having only been broadcast twice on the BBC. The second time was revised. Meaning that they never recorded either of them.

The first feature film of the Time Machine starred the late Rod Taylor as the Time Traveller(who was named George in the film) in 1960. And then another television film of the novella  was produced by Sunn Classic Pictures as a part of the Classics Illustrated series on NBC and it was a modernisation of the story, turning the Time Traveller into a 1970s scientist named Dr. Neil Perry, working for a fictional US defence contractor which eventually succeeds in destroying the world and leading to the creation of the Eloi and Morlocks in the near future.

 

Then in 2002, Simon Wells, great-grandson of H.G Wells developed a remake of his great-grandfather's story and it was the most loose adaptation of the Time Machine, notable deviations include the film being set in New York City instead of London and the Time Traveller(known as Dr. Alexander Hartdegen) building the time machine to  prevent his late fiancé's death, only to find that he cannot because as he discovers in the future, the Uber-Morlock explains that  it was  his reason for building the machine in the first place as changing it would cause a temporal paradox.

As a passionate fan of H.G. Wells' novel, The Time Machine, I have always been captivated by its 1949 television adaptation by the BBC. This production was unique in its faithful representation of Wells' vision, casting children and young women as Eloi and Morlocks (who were largely unseen and spoke no intelligible tongue), depicting time journeys through back projection, and synthesising futuristic architecture as hinted at in the book. The only significant deviation from the novel is in its ending where the Traveller realizes his experiences were real instead of returning to the future.

 

 

This adaptation has sadly been lost over time with parts missing from it. However, there's hope for recovery thanks to efforts by individuals like Don Coleman who are dedicated to restoring this piece of television history. He has reached out to Barry Learoyd's daughter - Learoyd being the production designer for this film - and plans on visiting David Pal, son of George Pal in hopes of recovering more photographs related to this film.

The restoration and broadcast of this version would not only be a tribute to H.G Wells' work but also an opportunity for fans like me worldwide who appreciate faithful adaptations that stay true to their source material.

We urge BBC executives not just as fans but also as advocates for preserving artistic integrity in adaptations, recognizing that each one is a part of our shared cultural heritage that deserves preservation.
