As a regular user of medical services, the financial weight of getting regular blood tests has created a persistent burden on me and numerous others like myself. We routinely need to have our blood examined to maintain our health, and end up paying hundreds of dollars each year — just for the tests alone. The situation in Queensland mirrors the larger national issue of ever-increasing medical expenses. My carer was the one who pointed me to this problem, as they have seen first-hand the struggle of people paying their medical bills.

Evidently, our healthcare system is organized in a manner where patient's pockets are being drained unnecessarily. Medicare Pathology could play a crucial role in alleviating this financial burden if blood test costs were to be covered by them. This would not only liberate us financially but will also motivate more individuals to prioritize their health, leading to better health outcomes in our community.

According to a report by Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, in the year 2016-17, Australians spent around $30 billion out-of-pocket for health services which includes costs for tests, medications and consultations (Ref: Australia's health 2018 report, AIHW). This demonstrates a pressing need for policy change.

We are imploring our government entities and Medicare Pathology to reassess this issue and take urgent action. By mandating Medicare to incorporate comprehensive blood testing costs into their coverage, the financial burden on individuals could be substantially lessened.
