Victories in School Dress Code Reform

The decision to ban skirts for girls isn’t just about uniforms, it reflects a deeper double standard. While boys are free to sag their pants or bend dress code rules without the same scrutiny, girls are being singled out and restricted. This sends the message that our clothing is inherently inappropriate or distracting, which shifts the blame onto us instead of holding everyone to the same expectation of respect. In a Catholic school that preaches dignity, equality, and moral responsibility, it feels hypocritical to enforce a rule that disproportionately limits girls’ expression while overlooking the same behavior in boys. Do better O’dowd.

The use of clear backpacks is completely unnecessary and uncalled for. Most students already have purchased and received their (expensive) backpacks for the school year and having those collect dust and never be used is a waste of parents money. We understand the usage of clear backpacks is for our students safety, however there are did ways to approach this then implementing clear backpacks (that will more than likely not even be used by most students.) For the females, having a NON SEE THROUGH backpack is essential for their feminine products. For the males, they use their backpacks to store their clothes like under garments , pants, and shirts. Backpacks are also a form of identification and expression of a student. For example, most seniors purchase a backpack that represents their younger self (little kid backpacks with cartoon characters and designs) to express themselves as they endure on their last year of school. At the end of the day, the sudden change to have clear backpacks is going to end up a complete mess between parents, the board, and most importantly the students. To enforce this IN ADDITION to the new house bill, in which bans phones during school hours, is just too much for both students and adults. Everyone should be able to adapt to one change instead of just being thrown to another one. In behalf of everyone in ECISD, I hope this gets resolved AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

It’s inconvenient for students who have already bought expensive backpacks that are gonna go to no use, it’s a violation of privacy for female students who need personal hygiene products. Someone who really wants to bring a gun is gonna bring it one way or another the clear backpacks aren’t gonna stop anything, the parents who have already bought expensive backpacks have to go and spend even more money on a clear backpack, is ECISD gonna refund all that money to all these parents? no.

Us having to wear a clear backpack is difficult. For girls especially since we have sanitary items that we need EVERY MONTH. If we cant even have pouches in our bag to hide our sanitary items then how are we supposed to hide them. We don’t want guys to be seeing that like are we serious. Having backpacks with designs and covers are better because we are allowed our privacy that WE AS MINORS are entitled too.
