Amend uniform policy for Union City High schools

Amend uniform policy for Union City High schools
The Issue
Imagine walking into Union City High School, ready to tackle the day’s lessons, only to be reprimanded and placed in in-school suspension for wearing the wrong type of uniform—despite it still bearing the school emblem. This reality affects students in Union City public schools, where rigid uniform policies overshadow a nurturing and academic-focused environment. The existing uniform policy is inconsistent and unfair, particularly impacting high school students who have gym class daily and, notably, female students who face the lack of a girls' locker room.
Currently, some students are being penalized not for a lack of adherence to wearing a uniform, but for wearing emblem logo uniform sweatpants instead of the stipulated uniform attire. Meanwhile, several hundred others remain in class without facing any suspension.
Suspension from school for such trivial matters detracts from valuable learning time, serves no educational purpose, and can negatively impact a student's academic journey and self-esteem. It is crucial to recognize that students are adhering to the spirit of the policy by wearing garments with the school logo.
We urge the Union City public school administration to amend its uniform policy to permit students the choice of wearing emblem logo uniform sweatpants. This change is not merely a matter of comfort but one of equity and a focus on what truly matters—education. Without a conducive learning environment, students cannot thrive. Within these policies, we must consider the unique challenges faced by our students, particularly female adolescents. The inflexibility of this policy, coupled with the absence of a girls’ locker room for changing attire, results in unnecessary stress and discomfort, especially for those experiencing monthly cycles.
Statistics indicate that students perform better academically in an environment where they feel supported and comfortable. Changing the uniform policy to allow for more flexibility will demonstrate to students that their needs and comfort are valued, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and understanding school culture.
I have reached out to the school and the Board of Education to speak with the individual in charge of the policy, but I have encountered delays. The principal has disclosed that this specific policy is a significant headache, stating that he would never suspend a student for wearing Union City emblem logo sweatpants, as his focus is on academics. So, why can't that be the core focus of the school? It seems contradictory to prioritize suspensions over supporting students in their educational journey.
There’s a line of kids lining up at the door, waiting to go to in-school suspension because of this sweatpants policy—only on Fridays. How is that conducive to the academics of the students when these uniforms are sold at the school uniform store? If that were the case, they should not be sold as part of the uniform attire. Additionally, let's not say it applies to all Union City public schools, as elementary students are not forced to wear khakis exclusively.
Join us in advocating for a change in the Union City public school uniform policy. Sign this petition to support our goal of creating a more supportive, fair, and academically focused environment for all students. Together, we can ensure that education prevails over punishment for our children's sake.
