UPDATE: New ACHS Policy Regarding Tardies & Lunch

On August 7, Adams City High School sent families an update outlining several new campus expectations. One item in particular deserves clarification: “Students who are tardy will make up their missed class time during lunch.” I want to be clear: the concern is not that students should be allowed to be late without consequences. Students should be expected to arrive to class on time, and reasonable consequences for repeated tardiness are appropriate. The concern is the use of a student’s lunch period to make up instructional time. The communication does not explain how much of a student’s lunch may be taken, whether students will still have adequate time to obtain and eat their meal, or how this will be handled for students with IEPs, 504 plans, medical accommodations, or dietary needs. This is another example of why parents and students are asking for clear communication and transparency regarding the changes being implemented at ACHS. We are asking the school and district to clarify: * How much of a student’s lunch can be required for tardy make-up time? * Will every student still be guaranteed adequate time to obtain and eat lunch? * What district policy authorizes this practice? * How will accommodations and individual student needs be handled? This petition has never been about opposing accountability or opposing change. It is about ensuring that changes intended to improve our school are reasonable, clearly communicated, and actually support students’ education and well-being. Our students deserve accountability and thoughtful policies. Education First. Voices Heard.
