The Issue
Uniforms have always been a topic of debate, but now it is an especially pressing issue at Haut Gap. Uniforms uphold the patriarchy, ruin the environment, and hit lower income families incredibly hard. On October 8th, 2025, the eighth grade girls were sat down during lunch and reprimanded for their skirt length, even though the majority of the girls wore them at an appropriate length. The school has been pushing this for months, and now they're threatening to ban skirts. They are pushing to ban an article of clothing simply because maybe two girls are breaking the rules. This is just another power trip and an attempt to control women through our institutions. They don't punish boys for their shorts being too short; why do they only punish girls? Uniforms are incredibly bad for the environment. Very few students actually wear their uniform outside of school, meaning once they've completed a grade, it's simply thrown out. Plus, kids in middle school grow pretty fast, making them buy new clothes. If uniforms were removed, students could integrate their regular closet into their school closet, ultimately creating less waste. Uniforms disproportionately affect lower income families, and an incoming skirt ban could worsen the problem. Going back to my point in the previous paragraph, kids grow very quickly around this time. Some lower income families quite literally can't afford to buy new clothes this quickly. With a skirt ban, some families may not have enough money to adapt. This threat came after the school banned the shoes Crocs, which led to much outrage among students. They are becoming more strict with every passing week. They are going to keep banning items until we're trapped in a corner. Now is the time to act. Please do not donate to the petition! We will not see the money, nor do we need it.
