When I visit Wellspan York, I have to show ID or go thru a medal detector. When I visit UPMC - Hanover, West York, Harrisburg - I just walk right in. We live in a violent society. Hospitals need to be secure for the employees, patients, and visitors.
UPMC needs to understand that they are nothing without patients and staff. if we were to boycott, what would they do? If everyone decided to go to Penn State or another organization, then what? its time they put safety before profit. being proactive is always the wisest way to be. to ensure senseless tragedies like this one never happen... if they were proactive from the start this never would have happen and that is on THEM. They have failed us when someone is killed in one of their facilities. and they continue to fail us when they keep turning a blind eye to protect their own bank accounts over the well-being of staff and patients. safety should be a HUGE priority for all healthcare facilities. when I was at WS 6 mos ago there was a threat of an active shooter. this is becoming too common place. we ALL deserve safety and peace of mind. its time they live up to their motto. Quality & Safety
UPMC's slogan is "Quality & Safety: We create a safe environment where quality is our guiding principle"1. UPMC's mission is to serve their community by providing outstanding patient care - its time they put actions to their words.
find it ironic we can afford badges to track our every movement in and out of a room to prove we did hourly rounding but have not found a way to give employees access to a panic alarm badge. Prioritize not only patient safety but employee safety.
I worked at UPMC hbg, I retired 2022 after 37yrs It was getting dangerous. No one wants to do anything until something happens. It is time for Upmc to step up due to this tragic event where this could have been prevented.
I worked at this facility in the ICU. I started at the previous location, and moved to the new location upon opening. I know how hard all of those nurses work. Every nurse everywhere. We love our community and want to help. However we also need protections so we can do the best job possible.
I am an RN at UPMC Hanover.
The safety of our staff and patients should be a UPMC priority. Health-care worker violence has been an issue for a long time and is only getting worse. I urge the leaders of UPMC to take stance, show the world they care about our safety and implement security including metal detectors and security officers at all entrances. Thank you.
When I worked for UPMC, we could not even get a panic button installed in my department. We had no alternate exit, and were visible through glass doors to the general public. OSHA requires that employers provide a safe working environment for employees. I believe it’s time to join a long list of hospitals who are implementing security measures that are effective and life-saving.
It shouldn’t take injuries or loss of life to have proper security measures in place. Employees should feel protected when they come to work. Metal detectors along with armed security should be already in place. There should be action plans routinely covered with hospital staff.
We need to beef up security and keep our medical staff safe. We go into this profession to help but we are the ones who end up getting injured and killed for doing a job that we were called to do!!
UPMC memorial is my home. While working there we had discussions about increased security measures however funding and planning always became a hurdle. It is time to prioritize the safety of our healthcare workers despite the cost.
