Trees bring shade, oxygen, a place for wildlife to live on , a place for people to sit under and enjoy, a place to decorate lights for Christmas, why cut it down? It provides so much benefit!
It's an icon, a staple of city hall and sentinel square, and it's a beautiful tree! No building or stand or empty grass space will replace its natural beauty and majesty. Tell me this how long has it stood there? Longer then the people who want it gone have been alive I'm sure of that. Shame on those who wish to take away this giant from the people and city of victoria.
As the City of Victoria grows so should this mighty tree, symbolizing strength and maturity, a link to the past and a promise to the future. The Centennial Square Sequoia is probably a last refuge for small birds and bats in downtown Victoria. Its removal would be environmentally criminal. City Council cannot abrogate it's responsibility by referring to this as a decision by past Councils and parks staff.
I have lived in Victoria my entire life, I remember visiting this tree when I was a child and the centennial square isn't complete without it. Not every public space needs to be reconstructed, the square just needs a mild cleanup. If the tree was sick or was a safety problem then I would understand, but the reason shown to cut it down is unnecessary.
It is amazing that in this day and age council would consider destroying a healthy tree to further a vanity project.
The destruction of a modern heritage site with architectural and sister city attributes to become a splash park is highly ill-conceived.
If you must have a splash park integate it into the Romeo site, a mere block away.
Do Not Destroy The Sequoia.
That tree and the beautiful cherry have more of a right to live in Victoria than any of the humans who want to degrade Centennial square with their ridiculous plans, any tree cut in Victoria should be banned under all but the strictest of conditions, and this does not classify as such. We need more green spaces not less, period. I grew up and lived in Victoria and still visit with my children from the gulf islands frequently, and we love walking by this sequoia especially and the fountain, and absolutely adore the cherry blossoms in the spring, it's insulting to even suggest cutting them down, how about we knock down city hall and expand the park? Sounds like a better idea to me.
Why am I under threat of eviction from my older apartment building so that a new building can be constructed in its place? I have lived in James Bay for over 34 years and am now in my senior years. I cannot afford to move, nor do I want to move. James Bay needs to retain its history, heritage and charms, and that includes the older style apartment buildings as well as heritage style homes. The City needs to look after the people who are here now but, sadly, planning for the future is overtaking us. If plans go ahead, I could be living out of my car ... or in a tent on Pandora Avenue. Look after the residents who are here now.
Haven't we learned anything within the last few years regarding healthy communities, preservation, and benefits of green space and on and on?
Build bigger, taller, destroy green space as well as the history of this unique neighbourhood?
Higher density is inevitable, can it not be addressed with better, healthier sustainability while using what we already have?
