I wouldn’t let my kids play on a playground in downtown Victoria which is only getting increasingly more dangerous, dirty and depressing. Why spend so much money building a playground when other playgrounds around the city have been taken over by people suffering from mental instability, addiction and/or homelessness? Hey, how about put the money into this issue instead?!
With this bill, the repeal of the Endangered Species act will narrow the definition of a critical habitat, thus leaving numerous endangered species at risk without adequate protection.
Creating "economic zones" will allow exploitation of the environment by bypassing regulations and facilitating expedited destruction without proper assessment.
This bill also serves to streamline the approval process for development projects by undermining and disregarding the rights of Indigenous communities to consult the developers in the process.
We demand that this bill is immediately withdrawn and reconsidered. All development projects must undergo environmental evaluations. We must continue the commitment to consult with Indigenous communities to ensure their rights and voices are included in development decisions.
Ontario's commitment to our environment and the rights of its Indigenous Peoples must not be compromised. Sustainable development must be prioritized in order to protect our province's rich and vulnerable biodiversity and cultural heritage.
As a front-line youth worker with nearly a decade of experience supporting unhoused individuals and those struggling with mental health and addictions, I strongly oppose Bills 5 and 6. Bill 6 criminalizes poverty and pushes people further from help. Bill 5 disregards Indigenous rights and environmental protections. These laws ignore the root causes of homelessness and addiction. We need compassion, housing, and support—not punishment. I urge leaders to stand up, speak out, and work together to overturn these harmful bills.
Protecting our environment becomes more and more urgent as time marches on. We are right on the edge of being able to reduce the impact of climate change, we cannot afford to let it get worse. The financial costs of climate change are already disastrous, costing Canada alone nearly $25 billion, which is half our entire GDP and costing Canadians around $630 annually.
Ontario has 270 and growing species of flora and fauna At Risk, it is senseless to endanger more, we need these species as part of our ecosystem and biome in order to have a healthy environment for us, the people of Ontario. More destruction means increasing health conditions, putting a strain on an already struggling health care system.
We are all a part of this complex ecosystem but we willingly destroy it for our own harm and peril.
We do not need more human expansion and domination of the environment. The only thing in nature that demands constant growth is cancer, and we are becoming the cancer of our own biome.
The costs to be incurred by Bill 5 are far too great, financially and environmentally.
Bill 5 makes Ontario look terrible on the national and global stage. Canada is world-renowned as an environmentally diverse and spectacular country, let's not allow Ontario to taint this reputation. Let's not make Ontario look like an environmental villain willing to pollute and destroy the things that keep us healthy and compassionate.
Mr Ford stood up to Trump's teriffs for us, helped us look and feel strong in the face of dangerous, threatening posturing from the President. We appreciated that very much. But Mr Ford will not stand up for our environment, will not stand up for public health and well-being, will not stand up to developers looking to pillage us for profit. He bows to these threats, welcomes them in, and has used that previous goodwill as a Trojan Horse to bring us destruction of environmental health and security.
Bill 5 must be fought, must be amended for the good of us all.
Sincerely,
Noah Patterson, Stratford Ontario
By forcing this type of legislation through you are also stepping on treaty rights. First Nations have the right to approve projects on their land and ensure that only best practices are used to extract resources. Their rights and the environment come first. There have been too many instances of communities dealing with toxic waste and other issues. This is another power grab.
It's disappointing enough that half of Ontario didn't vote in the last provincial election and now we have to contend with this? How entitled and greedy this provincial conservative government is to try and pass a bill like this when only 20% of total eligible voters voted for them. It disgusts me that this bill is being guised as something that will help Ontarians when it's only going to help corporate developers steamroll environmental protections. We already have so many endangered species with niche habitats. This would open the door to their extinction. Our province is beautiful and we need to protect it from bills like this.
As a youth in Ontario this bill will threaten a clean and green future for myself and every other youth in Ontario. I will not let Doug Ford take this away from us.
If we want Canada to still exist in the future, we have to protect the few areas left that are home to our native species of plants and animals. Without these things, our land becomes inert, and everything that Canada has ever stood for will disappear with it. This bill is a disgrace to the Canadian way of living and a disgrace to the treaties we have with our First Nations Communities. We took their land; we should at least give them the dignity of trying to maintain said land, and for all it has to offer without exploiting it for the rich person’s benefit. Canada is such a beautiful place and this bill will make it an ugly and gross excuse of a country. This bill goes against everything that Canadians should stand for, we’re one of the few countries left in the world with such expansive wilderness yet our leaders are so willing to throw all of that away? This bill is disgraceful to Canada and everybody who calls themselves Canadian.
Our country is metaphorically and literally on fire. We do not need to focus on new streets, highways, big corporations, et cetera. We need to preserve our nature and wildlife. The stuff that makes Canada so great.
