Absolutely unacceptable; this cenotaph has been a mainstay in Shubenacadie my entire life. As someone who has many family members who have served, I find this incredibly disrespectful to all veterans. Please return the cenotaph to where it belongs.
This monument and its location is a core part of the community. I remember attending many Remembrance Day services there and think to moving it for more parking spaces seems incredibly short sighted.
My name is Mike Conley. I grew up in Shubie and the stories told about that cenotaph were a contributing factor in my decision to join the Canadian Forces where I have proudly served for almost 19 years and continue to do so. The cenotaph needs to be moved back to its original position where it stood guard where brave men and women got on/off the trains in our town taking them to and from fighting. Moving it without public input was a monumental error in judgement.
I have lived in Stoney Creek Creek for several decades & make regular use of the parking lot that's slated to be repurposed. I have used it for everything from attending various functions at Olde Village churches--including donating blood, attending fundraisers & attending funeral wakes & celebrations of life--to attending medical appointments. Also for shopping regularly in the Creek. Including going to the many special events, from the weekly Market in the Creek spring through fall, to events like the Strawberryfest, Jazz in the Creek & Boots in the Creek. How are businesses supposed to attract patrons if parking is hard to come by? The past few years have seen a variety of great new businesses along King St. in downtown Stoney Creek, several of which I frequent. But ample parking is a MUST in order to keep patrons coming & returning. The parking lot at issue is VERY MUCH used & needed, throughout the week & throughout the year. Furthermore, the idea of deconstructing Veterans' Lane behind the Stoney Creek Legion is unthinkable, adding insult to injury. I say this as someone from a military family who highly values veterans & their service. Including the important role the Branch 622 Stoney Creek Legion plays in the area in which it's located. As much as I'm a proponent of affordable housing, I do NOT believe that developing 5 & 13 Lake Ave. & destroying Veterans' Lane is the way to go about developing more of it. There are other options that would better suit citizens of Stoney Creek & the surrounding area, as well as visitors to downtown Stoney Creek. Please do not "kill the Creek" just as the Olde Stoney Creek Village is going through a welcome revival period of sorts. That would be a big mistake--a step backwards that cannot be justified.
