Ensure equal treatment for Ontario's veteran organizations
The Issue
For over 180 years, the Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans in Canada (ANAVETS) has been a pillar of support, camaraderie, and hope for veterans and communities across Ontario. As the oldest veterans' organization in the world, established in 1840, our legacy is rich with stories of sacrifice, solidarity, and service. Yet, despite our longstanding contributions, ANAVETS is not receiving the recognition and support it deserves from the Ontario government.
Recently, the Ministry of the Attorney General granted liquor licence rebates exclusively to the Legions. While the Legions' contributions to veterans' welfare are indeed commendable, it is only fair that organizations like ANAVETS, who have equally served their communities and veterans with dedication, receive the same rebates. Willfully excluding ANAVETS from such benefits undermines our historical contributions and disregards the equal service we provide.
Veterans of ANAVETS have fought alongside their Legion counterparts, shoulder to shoulder, in defense of freedom and justice. They deserve to be treated with equal respect and support. ANAVETS has consistently served communities, supported charities, and provided spiritual fortitude for veterans. Many of our programs, like those of the Legions, rely on such financial support to continue functioning and aiding veterans in need.
Statistics show that Ontario is home to thousands of veterans who benefit from the support services provided by both the Legions and ANAVETS. In failing to acknowledge and support ANAVETS with liquor licence rebates, the government inadvertently weakens a critical support system within the veteran community.
It is imperative that the Ministry of the Attorney General reassess their decision to exclusively grant rebates to the Legions and include ANAVETS in their support structure. By doing so, the Ontario government would be honoring every organization that has dedicated its mission to serving those who have served.
We urge the Ministry to recognize the invaluable role that all veteran organizations play in the lives of veterans and the wider community. Let's secure equal treatment and pave the way for inclusive support to ensure that every veteran, regardless of their organizational affiliation, receives the assistance they deserve.
