I have lived in Weston for 72 years. During that time, I felt Western Arena was a central community gathering place. The free Saturday afternoon skates was where I learned how to skate. My grandchildren are now learning those same things along with ex experiencing the game of hockey for the first time. It is largely because we have an arena that is part of our community. Let us hope that it will continue to be that important and gathering place for our youth.
Weston Lions Arena is a historic part of our neighborhood. It is the only place for our children and youth to learn how to skate and play hockey in the area.
MLSE can surely find vacant space to build their Launchpad. Crossroads Plaza has an abundance of vacant store space that can be transformed into their vision. Please look into relocating this development! Let the kids play hockey!!
We absolutely WANT MLSE in the neighbourhood and love and support the vision of the Launchpad, however historically Weston arena is an important part of the community fabric. The arena is vital to the community and it is a beautiful piece of our history. We ask that you consider the importance of this beautiful arena, the joy it has brought the community and are thoughtful about how you design the space, to not take away from the community but instead enhance it.
I remember driving my nephew to practice and games at the arena during the 70s. He was so excited to be a member of a local team.
Lessons learn and friendships have lasted a lifetime.
Hockey in Weston is an integral part of our community. Of which everyone deserves an opportunity to play our Canadian Game.
Spaces like Millennium Park's skate park are one of many that represent the real character and fabric of the city. These spaces should be showcased to the world during times like the Stampede, not trampled all over.
The initial City of Calgary engagement went out in March, they repeatedly reinforced that this 10 year deal with Cowboys would not impact existing facilities, like the skatepark. They said anything needing temporarily closed was just to build the initial infrastructure. THEN after engagement, Cowboys has decided they will need to close the most used parts of the park (accessible to all ability riders) from June 11-July 30th and remove rails (that they "will" put back) How does this not impact public access for 2 full months of our already short summer months?
Millennium Park has been a staple for public recreation for decades, especially for youth that need somewhere safe to skate. Blocking off half of this access for a 10 day obnoxious party is not only appalling, but also makes it a safety risk for that area and the people that want to utilize that space. Not to mention the poor residents that live there and use that space daily. There are plenty of other places this tent could go that doesn’t impact the public in this way.
This park is a staple to Calgary skaters situated in the cities centre. The skatepark is for being active, I further more worry about the state of the park after the festivals patrons have no respect for the surface of the park or its features. Would you hold a music festival at a golds gym? What would the gym look like after the festivals patrons left the venue? If the grass space beside the skate park isn’t available due to cowboys construction isn’t that their own bad planning for the upcoming summer events? I personally believe this to be an unfair and unjust use of the space provided to the people in this city who are simply trying to remain active. I also think you will have an influx of skateboarding throughout your down town streets as a direct result of blocking these people from their facility. Thank you for taking the time to read my statement.

How is this new partnership that the city claimed would draw new events supposed to draw new skatepark events, if it is closed? Don't forget too, they "agreed" to close it one day later as well, to accommodate an already existing event on Go Skateboard Day, like that's a big favor on their behalf, but they are continuing to close it for the rest of the days. Wow thanks.
This skatepark was the original world's largest outdoor skatepark and should be showcased, not used as a staging area for an event that can literally be held in a parking lot or field. My teenage girls use this skatepark to be strong, empowered, healthy future adults and instead this outlet is being replaced for a 10 day drinking and music festival for the profit of a private company and 10 days requires 7 weeks of closures?! That's longer than the G7 requires for hosting the world.
