Victories in Music

Music in high school is why I am a working musician now. I would never have gotten to where I am as a performer without my high school music department. Many friends of mine who didn't go into music have voiced fond memories of their high school music programs, sharing how they were able to continue to appreciate music long after their time in high school, because of the things they were taught in school programs like Bayview's. Music makes the world a better place. Music, for some people, makes school actually worth going to, being one of the only safe spaces they have. It can be a place to form lifelong friendships, hone a craft that has historically made students higher achievers academically and in other areas of their lives, and gives people a creative outlet that they may never would have been able to experience before.

As a grade 9 student, using repetoir helped me feel like I was part of a community. If gave me a chance to make friends and see I wasn't alone in what I was learning.

This means that students at Bayview will have little to no opportunity to make music in their school at all, and lose their presence at school concerts, events, OBA competitions, and other external ensembles like TYWO and OPHB, since many students rely on band programs to continue learning music when they cannot afford lessons. I'm not a Bayview student, nor am I part of their school board, but I've seen how musically active and involved their school is, and the contributions Bayview music students make provincially and nationally. Without repertoire, countless music students will be deprived of the opportunity to pursue music or even participate in it at all. Music is much more than that - it helps students to destress, find community and participate in something that they love to help get through high school. This matters because it won't stay within Bayview. Bayview has a history of musical excellence and a good reputation just like my school, and if their program can be entirely dismantled just like that, it won't stay within their school or even their school board.

The repertoire program at Bayview has made it one of the leaders in the GTA for music education over my many years engaging with highschool and community music. Lead by passionate, talented, and driven teachers, and championed by hundreds of brilliant young musicians, this program has inspired and directly aided the growth and development of so many YRDSB students. I've had the pleasure of working with Bayview music teachers and students throughout my musical career, and am personally enriched beyond words by those experiences. I implore YRDSB to reconsider and change course.

Music ensembles are more than just a course, it’s a tight-knit community who’s impact has reached me in every aspect of life. I couldn’t imagine going through highschool without band, this is truly tragic.

As a friend of a student in the Bayview Secondary School Music Program, I have witnessed how much this program means to them and the rest of the students who partake in the Repertoire course. Music is an important part of human development. It allows us to express ourselves and shapes us as human beings. Sharing music with others is what builds one of the strongest school communities ever. Just because it is not mandatory to other students does not mean it should be taken away from those who need it most.

In 1967 I took grade 9 Band at BSS. I continued to play with the Richmond Hill Youth Concert Band until it disbanded. I graduated from York U with a BA and B.Ed in 1976 and at my first interview for a job with the YRDSB the principal said if I could teach Band, I had a job at Pleasantville PS. I later became an itinerant teacher at 4 schools, before finally settling at Crosby Heights PS to finish my career in 2006. Since 1980 I have played continuously with the Newmarket Citizens Band as first chair trumpet for the last 45 years. That’s why music is important!!!!!!!

The fact that this school is not only losing an amazing extracurricular opportunity, and a place for self expression and involvement, but a school credited course M is outrageous. As a fellow YRDSB musician getting rid of repertoire is UNACCEPTABLE!!

I am a senior student who has taken repertoire for the past two years at another York region District school board school. to cut repertoire would be a tragedy and would take away opportunities from many aspiring musicians. being in repertoire, the past two years has meant the world to me at my school. I can’t imagine it being gone for others.
