It’s unfortunate that we’re having to fight this AGAIN. It’s was clear last year that this B&N deal, while it may have helped the system make more off books, was not in the best interest of students. It’s profit relies on students not knowing or forgetting to opt out which is why making it opt-in was “not on the table” according to disgraced Chancellor Cheng. It was a money grab then and it’s a money grab now. Students can see it for what it is.

It's honestly ridiculous that Eastern Connecticut State University expects students to pay for automatic textbook billing. College students are already struggling with tuition, rent, and basic living expenses—adding textbook costs on top of that is just unreasonable. The assumption that all students can afford these additional costs is out of touch with the reality that many of us are facing. This system needs to be reconsidered because it creates an unnecessary financial burden on those who can least afford it.

It's unfair and unethical to hide the information from students about how much this will potentially cost us. The automatic opt-in forces students to pay for books before they've been assigned, before professors even decide what texts they want for their classes. Some students don't check their emails, some students get a lot of emails. Also, how are new/incoming students supposed to know about all this information? The ineffectiveness of the bookstore's business model is not the problem of the students, nor their responsibility to bear the burden of fixing through extortion.

This is purely obnoxious, not only does eastern have a strict attendance policy but is now forcing us to pay automatically for textbooks we may not even use? I spent both my first and my second year studying just perfectly without the textbooks and passed with an 3.5 gpa max. Not everyone can afford to pay the extra charges of textbooks that are going to be sitting down to collect dust, I’m an art major - what will a book of science or even mathematics do to serve me in my career if that is not my chosen path? Purely obnoxious. Some people live from pay check to pay check and depend on benefits such as snap benefits - some are even taking part-time jobs here at eastern in order to receive said benefits from our social security office. We are forced to pay $13,000 dollars per semester, and now they want to add up extra fees to our tuition because it’s beneficial? >>>>>> WHAT ASHLEY SAID!!!!

This only benefits whoever can afford them and the truth is that we don’t exactly live in an economy anymore where eggs are priced $1.00 and a square block of is priced even lesser.

I think this is ridiculous. ECSU should NOT expect its students to pay this bill especially in this day and age, students are already struggling to pay for everyday things. Myself as a commuter, I have other bills to pay for like my car bill, car insurance, and gas. All of that costs a great amount of money for someone who can only work part time while participating in full time college. The automatic textbook billing should be reconsidered or done away with. This semester I didn’t need to buy any books, so if this act was implemented I would’ve paid for something I didn’t need. This whole thing in unnecessary and should not be implemented because it creates an even larger financial burden on students can already can’t afford much.

This is such an inconsiderate and anti-student proposal. In this economy, expecting already-struggling students to pay extra for books that are often not utilized in classes, is absurd. If this institution truly cares for their students and don't see us as dollar signs, this bill will not be implemented. There is no reason to implement such a cash-grab when we are already facing increased tuition, and financial burdens (within and outside of this institution). - Signed a first-generation, honors student who can barely afford going here as is.

I already do not see my automatic lab fees being put to good use. I do not believe automatic textbook fees would be used effectively either. This is another way to take money from students who already are paying thousands of dollars to attend school.

Eastern Connecticut State University already charges students thousands in tuition, fees, and housing—yet now they want to impose automatic textbook billing, forcing additional, often exorbitant, charges onto our accounts without our consent. This is not about helping students; it’s about maximizing profits at our expense. Many of us simply cannot afford these inflated textbook prices, especially when more affordable alternatives exist. The university should be supporting students, not exploiting them. We deserve the right to make our own purchasing decisions, not be coerced into lining the pockets of publishers and administrators. It’s time to demand transparency, fairness, and real solutions. #StopAutoBilling
