We appreciate your support and would love to reach 400 signatures by Tuesday morning! Keep the conversation going—talk to your friends, family, and classmates about Automatic Textbook Billing and the issue of fees being added to tuition bills without prior consent.
Thank you for standing with us!
"Opposition to Any Kind of Automatic Textbook Billing Policies without meaningful consultation with and approval by elected student and faculty representatives.
Whereas bookstores and publishers promote various policies, including textbook
fees for students, and whereas such policies are often developed in response to a
request for proposal (RFP) that remains inaccessible to the public until after the
contract is awarded violating students and faculty shared governance;
Whereas these policies are typically framed as benefiting students through cost
savings and academic success, yet they lack institution-specific data, making such
claims unverifiable;
Whereas the lack of publicly available information regarding textbook pricing
structures prevents meaningful faculty and student input;
Whereas the inability to review the proposal before the contract is awarded makes
it impossible to determine whether it violates academic freedom;
Whereas concerns about student and faculty data privacy are significant, and
institutions rarely implement policies to assess whether such data is sold to third
parties;
Resolved, that Eastern-AAUP opposes any policy—including Automatic Textbook
Billing, Inclusive Access, or Equitable Access—that automatically adds textbook
fees to students’ tuition without their explicit, prior consent for each semester they
are enrolled at Eastern."
