The Issue

Dear President Ismaili,

We, the students of Eastern, respectfully urge you to make a firm commitment to rejecting any form of Automatic Textbook Billing that enrolls students without their prior consent and automatically charges them for course materials.

Last year, Chancellor Cheng attempted to implement an Automatic Textbook Billing policy across the four state universities and Charter Oak. Students from all four institutions fought tirelessly against it, launching a petition that garnered 1,300 signatures. As a result of our collective efforts, this policy was successfully defeated at the four state universities.

Currently, Eastern is in the process of signing a new contract for our bookstore. However, we have little transparency into this process. For example, what kinds of proposals are being considered? What kinds of protections are there for students? To ensure that our rights as consumers are protected, we ask you to pledge that Eastern will not implement an Automatic Textbook Billing policy that enrolls students without their explicit, prior consent.

Sincerely,
The Students of Eastern
