I find it very disturbing that this golf course is even being considered as a site for future baseball fields. Honestly how many times have you driven by our existing baseball fields and found them being used on a regular basis. You are proposing to take away the one and only community golf course in our vicinity that is so heavily relied upon by so many seniors. The Maple Ridge course is so well suited to seniors and other golfers as it offers a more family community experience that other more serious courses cannot provide. My wife and I are just two of many seniors that look forward to the exercise and comradery with others that the MR course provides. It is a beautiful course so well maintained, walkable for just enough exercise, challenging enough for any golfer, affordable, and simply a pleasure to play on.
Shame on anyone that would take this away.
I am one of the great granddaughters of John McIvor the original pioneer owner of the property the Maple Ridge Golf Course is located on. Named after the ridge of maple trees that lined the crest of the hill along the Fraser River.
My family & so many of our friends grew up learning to play golf at this pristine historic location, affordable & accessible to everyone. The community & municipality have all greatly benefited from this gem of a 9 hole golf course. It does not make any sense to lose it to another baseball diamond & parking lot.
Learned to play golf at this course and was a member of the men’s club for about a decade. Maple Ridge has ball fields literally a block away. This smells fishy to me with a hint of greed involved. This is unique to have a club in the centre of the city. Once it is gone, it’s gone. Don’t be stupid and leave it alone.
I no longer live in Maple Ridge but the Maple Ridge golf course was part of my childhood. Later in life when I found golf, it was there with family and friends I played my first real round. Still playing to this day.
I love this golf coarse it has been here all my life. I am 28years old. My dad has played on this coarse and I look forward to playing even more and more every day. It is amazing historical site and the community around the golf coarse is amazing it is like a family. Also is one of the best and cheaper golf courses which allows all ages and skill sets in golf to play here. It would be one of the biggest losses for Maple ridge. It is a true staple of maple ridge. Relocating a baseball field that no one uses to a golf course that is used all the time throughout the year. We don't need more baseball fields to sit unused. Maple ridge has had poor development decision for the last 10 years, don't take away one of the most loved places in Maple ridge because Maple ridge has sold and development to much land into houses, should not be the golf courses problem.
This golf course is always very busy which means a lot of people are using it in the community. This is something that older people can do where there is not a lot of physical activities for seniors in the community now. As the population is ageing more and more people are taking up the game as it is good exercise for older people and people of all ages . I understand that baseball and other sports that young people can play are important, but they’re very few sports that the older people can play. Obviously, the people on council are not golfers and want sports for their kids to be cheaper and have no care about the older generation in their community.
The Maple Ridge Golf Course is a one of kind course in our area and caters to anyone who would like to play. It is inexpensive to play on, is beautifully maintained and is a gem that should not be destroyed to make way for baseball fields, or any other developments. I first played on it in 1975 and have been playing there ever since I moved here permanently in 1979. Together with friends we play about 30 times a year and even in the winter we play when weather permits. There are many other people like me that love the course and would have to stop playing if it is taken away from us because other local courses are expensive and not as welcoming. I sincerely hope that the Maple Ridge Council will listen to the petitioners and rethink this plan. Others have already noted that the golf course was donated to the city on the understanding it would remain a golf course.
As a frequent golfer at MRGC, I am dumbfounded on why this council would blatantly dismiss the heritage and historical history of the golf course lands. I am angry at why this action would even be considered. I implore this council to read up on the historical significance the course and this property has in Maple Ridge. The property is a historical landmark and a vital amenity that is enjoyed and used by people from Maple Ridge and all over the lower mainland. I implore you as a council to rethink your strategy before you do irreparable harm to the city, it's residents, and it's green space.
Thank you
