I worked in a car showroom in Stockport when this man called Curtis Arnold now calling himself Dan from DJE Media walked in one day with a hand held video camera saying he wanted to film the cars , we told him that it was company policy that there was no filming allowed especially of customers or staff yet he continued to walk around recording unbeknown to us on a tiny go-pro camera strapped to his chest ,about a week after his visit a friend told me about the recording on YouTube I was so upset at the nasty personal comments by people on his channel , he had no right to film me and put me on you tube it made me feel really embarrassed and upset I hope he gets banned from upsetting more people.
Thank you for starting this petition it means a lot x
Anyone who loves watching movies, listening to music, reading, playing games, or really doing anything that requires an artist/writer should care about this (imo). ESPECIALLY if they're a fan who loves consistency, care, and hardwork in the media they consume. That being said, I'm not a big artist/writer, I'm just starting out in my creative career but, it's a dream I've carried with me since I was a kid inspite of every person telling me "that's not a real job", or "that'll never make a living". I'd really like a chance to actually get to be a successful creator and prove them wrong. I'd like other creatives to find this success too. Especially knowing companies who don't need to save money sitting on top of millions or even billions have saved THOUSANDS stealing from creatives. That's a lot of unfed bellies, unpaid bills, and unnecessary hardship.
I have fought through over a decade of abysmal health, barely surviving on numerous occasions. Eventually, I was finally able to write - to realise my dream of becoming a published author. I now have two books out and more to come. It is hard work, it is poorly remunerated, but it is what I love. It is NOT okay to then have copyright laws, that exist in order to protect us and our work, ignored and our work stolen. This is a criminal act. It flies in the face of everything we work for. The law is clear and is reiterated for clarification at the front of every book we have written. I did not beat death and work this hard, for Meta to come along and take what they have no right to, and to not ask permission, much less pay for it. It is despicable that our rights and the law is not being heavily enforced. Meta owes us all a public apology, our work back, and remuneration for what they have already stolen. Greed and entitlement...
When you have dedicated 25 years of your life to research and writing and a huge wealthy conglomerate takes without permission every one of your books to train their AI platform, and willfully ignores your intellectual property, it is heartbreaking and an ultimate betrayal. You would hope that your government would protect the creative industries, and consider the impact on the lives of struggling authors.
As creatives we are often taken advantage of. Rarely do we actually get paid the true value of our time, effort and determination; not to follow the wide road of employment in a dull job. But to be an artist, writer & creator. The only real value we have is our IP and if anyone wants to use it, you must ask and pay. You cannot take it. That is theft. My work is my voice and it is not up for grabs.
As a reader, I place huge value on the time, effort and creativity of every author of every book I've ever read. Stealing authors' and creatives' work undermines our creative industries and is illegal and immoral. Time for the government to act to protect our artists, writers and creative industries.
My entire life and all of my core values are grounded in the arts, specifically storytelling. It is an actual offense that companies and by extension regular people are turning to a smart machine that hasn’t felt love, failure, or frustration to tell stories for them, rather than humans with lived experiences and emotions simply because it’s cheaper. It devalues the very thing that has played a crucial role in human survival. Society already devalues us. So many of us already work for next to nothing. The royalties I’ve made on my book over the last three years, which has won awards and has primarily five star reviews, totals $34 US dollars. We already make nothing on our art, why are you devaluing us further!
The least META can do is to ask each author politely for permission to use their work for whatever research of work they are doing. Would we steal their work? No! It's fraud and has no place in our civilised society. Marion Lindsey-Noble, author of romantic and crime fiction
If you enjoy any kind of human made media (books, TV, films, animation, art work etc.) This is petition is so important. If allowed, it would set a precedent for any and all human created works to stolen by AI. Not only would this destroy the creative drive for most creators, it would all but guarantee that any new media we get to consume will be absolute slop. Human creativity has been the anchor for so long in our society, don’t let the government destroy it.
