Stop the Malaysia MCMC’s DNS Redirection Policy – Protect Internet Freedom in Malaysia!

The Issue

Dear Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and fellow Malaysians,

We are deeply concerned about the recent move by MCMC requiring all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Malaysia to implement DNS redirection by 30 September. While this policy has been introduced with the intention of blocking harmful and illegal content such as online gambling, pornography, and scams, we believe that the risks outweigh the benefits.

This DNS redirection could potentially lead to:

  1. Threats to Internet Freedom: Once implemented, this tool could be expanded to censor other types of content, including news, critical voices, and information that does not align with certain political interests. This raises serious concerns about the future of free speech and access to information in Malaysia.
  2. Privacy and Security Risks: DNS redirection creates vulnerabilities, as users could be unknowingly redirected to unauthenticated sites. This opens the door to data interception, manipulation of search results, and other privacy breaches. The policy could also prevent Malaysians from using secure and private DNS services like Google and Cloudflare.
  3. Slippery Slope Toward Greater Censorship: Once such a system is in place, it becomes easier for authorities to block websites and restrict access to information, much like internet censorship in countries with strict content control. The potential for misuse in the future is high, which could infringe upon the rights of ordinary Malaysians.
  4. Negative Impact on Businesses: Malaysian businesses, especially those relying on secure internet connections and public DNS services, could face disruptions. Global services and enterprises that depend on an open internet may be forced to consider operating elsewhere.

The internet should remain free, secure, and open for all Malaysians. We understand the importance of protecting users from harmful content, but we believe there are better, more transparent, and secure ways to do this without jeopardizing internet freedom and user privacy.

We urge MCMC to:

  • Halt the DNS redirection policy and conduct a transparent public consultation to discuss alternative methods for safeguarding users without compromising internet freedom.
  • Ensure that the internet remains open and uncensored for all users, safeguarding our right to access information and express ourselves freely online.
  • Prioritize user privacy and security by avoiding measures that could expose internet users to greater risks.

Sign this petition to stand for internet freedom and the right to access an open, safe, and uncensored internet in Malaysia. Together, we can protect our digital future!
