Chickens are a widely debated topic, with petitions addressing various issues related to their treatment and welfare. Key themes include advocating for better living conditions in factory farms, promoting cruelty-free practices, and banning inhumane farming practices such as debeaking and overcrowding.
One popular petition calls for the end of battery cages in egg production, highlighting the cramped and unsanitary conditions these chickens endure. Another petition focuses on stopping the practice of live feather plucking, emphasizing the cruelty of extracting feathers from birds while they are still alive.
By exploring these petitions and taking action, individuals can contribute to improving the well-being of chickens and promoting more ethical farming practices. Your participation can make a significant impact on the treatment of these animals and help create a more compassionate world for all living beings.
I love having chickens. My children enjoy taking care of them. I almost always have extra eggs my neighbors enjoy. Thank you for taking action so more people can have access to clean fresh eggs and poultry.
I am four people having chickens on their property as long as they go through a training and realize this is a financial and long-term commitment. These are living beings and must be cared for properly. Therefore they need daily care, a place to live where they are warm in the winter and shade provided in the summer, fresh, clean water daily, chicken feed daily, a place for them to roost at night that is protected from predators, the chicken pen and chicken house must be cleaned out on a regular basis. There must be a place provided for them to take their dry baths in dirt that will help keep them healthy. So, if people are committed to educating themselves, committed to the financial expense of caring for chickens, willing to make sure that everything that is needed is provided for these live animals, then I support this. But, humans are fickle and just like during the pandemic when everybody adopted a pet and then they decided they didn't have time for them so they gave them to shelters. That behavior from humans is not okay. So think before you make a commitment to keeping live chickens on your property.
HOA’s have too much deciding powers that can negatively affect homeowners. Their ability to source their own food on their own land is one of these things. Homeowners should be able to have their own garden, chickens for eggs, etc. to help sustain themselves.
Chickens are a great way to engage with our community and neighbors. When we lived outside city limits, our children loved learning how to raise and care for chickens. It’s a great opportunity that requires very little land compared to the requirements of most other animals. I would love for others to have the same opportunity to experience the chicken life, regardless of zip code, if they so choose!
I lost several chicks that were shipped to a customer because of negligence by the post office. The chicks were 2 days late getting to the customer and it caused them to perish. The post office allowed them to sit in their warehouse or truck for days. This was devastating.
I appreciate the concern but why is the petitioner still shipping one day old chicks if he knows they are suffering? One day old chicks should be with their mothers, not in containers being shipped like cargo.
The price of food anymore is unreal.it would save on my wallet to be able to raise my own chickens.. plus they keep the bug's down and it's great education for the grandkids gives them responsibility
I moved to White Lake from a city in Minnesota with a population of more than 300,000 and small city lot sizes. Chickens were allowed and common. I was absolutely shocked to find the lot size requirement in White Lake, a place that still feels rural despite its development and proximity to larger cities. Chickens are a breeze to care for and are an educational experience not only for children but also for adults. Too many people have become severely disconnected from where their food comes from and silly regulations like this one don't help. We need to give power back to people. There are so many benefits to collecting your own eggs, from knowing what the hens are being fed to the environmental impact of not shipping eggs long distances and keeping them cool. It's a no-brainer... residents of White Lake should be allowed to have hens, ducks, and rabbits regardless of their lot size.
I am hoping you will consider amending the poultry ordinance here in white Lake. I have 2 young girls, 5 and 7 at home. I would love for them to wake up in the morning and be excited to run outside and see our chickens. I think it is a great teaching opportunity about responsibility and animal care. More importantly being able to show them where our food is coming from. Chickens help control pest problems and are natural fertilizers which greatly reduces the need to use chemicals. I’m
