Compass Group: Follow through on your animal welfare promises

The Issue

Compass Group North America—which is the largest foodservice provider in the United States and serves schools, hospitals, restaurants, and arenas across the country—is deceiving its customers and clients. As the self-proclaimed “leading foodservice and support services company,” Compass holds a lot of power—and responsibility to follow through on the promises it makes.

Compass Group was recently included in The Humane League's Foodservice Provider Guide, which calls on the multibillion-dollar corporation to do better for the millions of animals who are suffering horrific cruelty in its supply chains.

Sadly, the vast majority of animals raised for Compass’s clients live a life of constant misery:

  • Chickens raised for meat are bred to grow at such an alarming rate that they suffer from extremely painful leg deformities, chemical burns from spending their lives lying in ammonia-laden waste, and even organ failure. At the slaughterhouse, they are violently shackled upside down, painfully shocked with electricity, and cut open at the throat—often while still conscious and able to feel pain.
  • Mother pigs are kept in small metal cages known as “gestation crates” for the entirety of their pregnancies. These crates are so tight that the sows cannot stand or turn around for months at a time. As a result of this intensive confinement, these intelligent, sensitive animals suffer from extreme physical and mental distress.
  • Some of Compass Group's suppliers are still trapping egg-laying hens in battery cages for the majority of their lives, cramming up to ten birds in the space of an iPad. These archaic cages confine birds so tightly that they can't even stretch out their wings or engage in any of their natural behaviors. As a result of this intensive confinement, hens spend every day in physical and mental agony.

This is unacceptable treatment.

Compass Group needs to end its support of these terrible factory farming practices once and for all.

The follow-through on companies’ commitments is what truly matters; otherwise, it’s just broken promises and continued corporate greed—and no improvements that actually help animals are made.

It’s time for Compass to stop hiding behind empty promises and make real progress for the animals and for its clients.
