In 2016, Schwan’s Company committed to transitioning over to 100% cage-free eggs by 2020. 2020 passed, and it didn’t keep its promise. Instead, Schwan's Company pushed back its deadline to 2025.

And now, as 2025 approaches, Schwan’s Company shows no progress toward fulfilling its animal welfare commitment. This is disturbing; after devaluing consumer demand for higher welfare products, how do we know Schwan's Company won’t fail the animals again? 

Had Schwan’s Company honored its commitment, the impact would have been significant; its products include frozen pizza and breakfast brands Red Baron, Freschetta, Tony's, Big Daddy's, and Hearth & Fire, frozen dessert brands Edwards and Mrs. Smith's, and frozen Asian food brands bibigo, Pagoda, and MINH, among others. 

Why should Schwan’s Company publicly report progress on its cage-free egg transition, other than the fact that it’s the honest and transparent thing to do? Caged hens are crammed together into small, filthy, and barren wire cages. Unable to even spread her own wings, each hen has the space about the size of an iPad on which to live her entire, miserable life. They can’t dust-bathe or express most of their other natural behaviors. Often, they suffer from broken bones and mental anguish. 

Chickens are social, intelligent animals who should not be forced to live in such horrifying conditions. And food providers like Schwan’s Company should not go back on their commitments, especially when they affect the lives of so many animals. 

Schwan’s Company, you have a second chance to keep your promises for the animals: do the right thing by reporting progress on your cage-free egg policy!
