Not long ago, during the 2020 bushfires, millions of dollars was raised to save the koalas. Donations came from all over the world. I wonder what these people think when they hear that koalas, an endangered species, are now being shot and killed by a sniper in a helicopter.

1927 BLACK AUGUST Qld - History repeating again! Do we need another US President to intervene (US Pres Hoover banned import of Koala pelts 1930) This is not the first time Victoria has hunted Koalas causing their numbers to dwindle below 1,000 In 1899 Richard Semon, a German biologist, wrote about his experiences shooting a koala: “My shot wounded the creature … it hung for some time suspended by its fore-paws, and trying in vain to draw up its hind- paws, and so swing itself on to the branch. … I aimed once more, and struck its head and left forefoot. Still it clung to the tree for a while with its right fore-paw, then fell down heavily, and died a few minutes later. It was a strong fully-developed female, carrying a half-grown young one on its back. The poor little thing clung to its dead mother with its sharp paws, and would not be torn away. I thought of taking it into my camp and rearing it, but the next morning it had left its mother’s cold body and disappeared.” There is no excuse, plenty of Australian are willing to learn how to rehabilitate injured or sick Koala and there are many regions in need of boosting their populations. Not only a shame, but embarrassing on the world stage

This is absolutely horrifying. For these animals to survive a wildfire only to be seriously injured or killed by humans for no reason is disgusting. We as humans are supposed to protect animals, as they have no way to defend themselves in our modern world. The Australian government should be ashamed of themselves for killing, injuring, and most likely orphaning animals that have protected status globally under the IUCN. Shame on the government for thinking they can make such a cruel decision.

Totally inhumane. The government does not hesitate to use koalas in their Visit Australia Tourism Adverts but in truth is decimating their population. Please stop this genocide against koalas. They have every right to be in this country as the humans inhabiting Australia. Give them the corridors they deserve and stop this cruelty. This reminds me of the heartbreaking video of the orang utan in a Malaysian jungle trying to fight off with his bare hands machinery destroying his habitat. His home. This is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihPfB30YT_c In the same way the Malaysian government uses the orang utan in their Visit Malaysia tourism adverts and then mercilessly wipes out their population, Australia is doing the same. What difference is Australia now compared to corrupt governments?

These decisions are being made without consideration of the real value of the animals. This is a process that would address this crisis without resorting to this awful end-practice. Such value can’t be determined without acknowledging the link with local communities; the same communities denied any say in the outcome. The cull is being defended by ‘experts’ from Universities who were part of the decisions made behind closed doors. But what is expertise if it is based on incomplete evidence and evaluation? Opinion is not expertise. If it did not properly evaluate the cost-benefit (impossible without involving local people), such decisions may be found to have been negligent. In reality, culling Koalas is a cynical move. It wipes value off the state’s bottom line, it disempowers local people and denies communities a new source of revenue from nature-based finance. We have corporatised our koala conservation based on corporate personhood and while this may have served us well in the past, it no longer works. The scientists behind these decisions may be misleading decision-makers through their lack of understanding of ecosystems and the value of living nature.

They said they used helicopters because the area was "inaccessible", yet they managed to access the same area in 2022 and capture koalas for a study. There have also been multiple studies by both VIC and NSW government agencies proving that translocation of koalas is successful. So capture and relocation would clearly have been possible. But I guess 700 bullets was less effort. How much of this decision was to ensure koalas didn't reduce profitable yield of the surrounding blue gum plantations, I wonder.

Australia is a very unique place with distinct flora and fauna only found on this continent. Destroy it, and the world loses some of the most beautiful animals and species found on the planet. Save the forests and native habitats!

Beyond belief that the Victorian premier Allan has endorsed the killing of koalas in such a vile manner. Mother koalas with joeys left to suffer. We the people demand a parliamentary inquiry. That this killing of koalas was kept under wraps is a state and national disgrace. Worldwide our native Fauna is loved , tourism is enhanced by the nature of our flora and fauna. This needs urgent inquiry and the public demand transparency and Accountability . Jenny Morrison.
