As the mother of a teenager who is constantly bombarded by news of an earth in crisis, and who is passionate about nature, I find it unconscionable that the shire is taking this step backwards. This issue will define our children’s future and to justify it as a cost saving is vile.
Fellow students,
Today I want to talk about something that affects every single one of us — our planet.
You’ve probably heard people talk about climate change. It sounds like a big, distant problem. But it’s not. It’s here. It’s now. It’s real.
We see it in hotter days, stronger storms, melting ice, and animals losing their homes. It’s happening all over the world. And if we don’t act, it’s only going to get worse.
But here’s the good news: we can do something about it.
Even though we’re only in Year 8, our voices matter. Our choices matter. We may be young, but we are not powerless.
We can make real changes — by speaking up, by learning more, and by taking action. We can recycle more, waste less, plant trees, walk or ride instead of always getting a lift, and help our families and schools do the same.
And we can inspire others — our friends, our parents, even our teachers — to care more too.
Fellow students, imagine one day in the future, someone asking you:
"What did you do when the Earth needed help?"
And you can proudly say:
"I stood up. I helped. I made a difference."
Let’s be the generation that fights for a better world. Not just for ourselves — but for everyone, everywhere.
The Earth needs us. The time is now.
Let’s rise together.
Thank you.
Darebin Council has an admirable history in leading on climate action. We are hugely disappointed to see this reversed in the latest proposals. This community cares HUGELY about climate issues and Council cannot shirk its responsibility to assist residents in the transition.
Please allocate funds for creating more greenery and shade in our suburbs on the coast for the health and safety of our children and future generations. The impacts of lack of shade and greenery are huge - increased skin cancers, and poor health outcomes due to lack of physical exercise outside. Can I please also ask that Narara (West Gosford end please also be considered - there is scant shade in our suburban area, resulting in most residents avoiding going on walks for the majority of the day, especially in the warmer months). Thank you.
As we continue to build more higher density housing, we are losing our backyard space. How amazing it would be that our streets and public spaces become our new oasis that improves air quality, manages drainage and creates shade in a way that can be so much more aesthetically pleasing.
Woy Woy and the rest of the peninsular are in desperate need of urban canopy regeneration. The fact that we have worse % canopy cover than many capital city suburbs and yet we’re on the Central Coast is a disgrace. Central Coast Council carry much of the blame for both the current state of our canopy and for the lack of action to address it so far. They now need to step up and stop making excuses.
I have watched the local greenery around my home and suburb steadily decrease with each passing year, seeing less and less birds and wild life. Change needs to come
The council keeps increasing rates and yet the primary service that benefits us is being reduced. Theyre delusional if they think a fortnightly collection is enough - people are going to start stacking excess waste next to their bins and I'm not looking forward to Rockingham becoming the smelliest suburb in Perth.
Kalamunda council cut our general waste to a 1/2 size bin, collected every 2nd week. Fogo, full size, 1x/week and recycle 1x/week.
The general waste bin overflows and stinks, the fogo bin is always empty because we compost.
Bad policy! No prior consultation.
