Stop floodplain infill and development in Ipswich
The issue
We, the undersigned residents and ratepayers of Ipswich, have observed with growing alarm the increased rate of floodplain infill and development that has occurred in the Bremer Catchment in the past twenty years.
We note that there has been no quantitative study into the cumulative effects of these actions which directly influence Ipswich:
. increased flood heights and velocities
. increased risk with residents on flood islands
. riverine bank instability
. imposts on Council infrastructure
. taxpayer funded by-backs
. additional strain on emergency services
. higher insurance costs
We therefore ask Ipswich City Council to immediately halt all riverine and floodplain development until an independent peer reviewed assessment has been taken that shows that these developments will cause:
. no increase in flooding for existing residents and households
. no increase in riverine scouring and erosion
. no heightened risk to life and property,
. no increased load on emergency services
. no necessity for class action for buy-backs of dwellings
. no worsening of insurance costs to residents and ratepayers
