Reduce fire risk in Inverleigh Flora and Fauna Reserve

Reduce fire risk in Inverleigh Flora and Fauna Reserve
The issue
Parks Victoria, your immediate attention is crucial for the safety and preservation of the Inverleigh Flora and Fauna Reserve, commonly known as the Inverleigh Common. Nestled in the heart of Victoria, this reserve is a cherished natural habitat for a wide range of flora and fauna, integral to the biodiversity and ecological balance of our region. However, the increasing fuel load within the reserve poses an imminent threat of catastrophic fires, endangering not only the wildlife and vegetation but also the surrounding communities of Inverleigh and Teesdale.
In 2009, a rare native orchid was identified within a small area of the reserve, which is now fenced off. Despite this species being limited to a defined area, the entire 2,600 acres were reclassified as a conservation reserve and placed under Parks Victoria management. This decision has prevented effective fuel reduction across the wider Common
Historically, the community had safe and controlled access to the reserve, allowing for effective management and reduction of combustible materials. However, recent restrictions have limited this access, resulting in an accumulation of dead wood, leaves, and other combustible forest debris. The risk of a devastating fire is escalating with each passing day, especially when we approach the hotter months of the year marked by dry weather and high winds.
The tragic bushfires across Victoria in past years serve as a dire warning of what could occur if proactive measures are not undertaken. Already, local residents have expressed concern over the looming danger, emphasizing the need for immediate and effective fire mitigation strategies.
We implore Parks Victoria to restore controlled community access to the reserve, enabling residents to partake in safe and organized clean-up activities that significantly reduce the potential for fire outbreaks. Additionally, we urge the implementation of professional fire mitigation strategies, including prescribed burns, pruning, and other scientifically-supported measures to manage the fuel load within the reserve.
With coordinated efforts between Parks Victoria, local authorities, fire management experts, and the community, we can develop a comprehensive plan that ensures the safety of all. Protecting the Inverleigh Flora and Fauna Reserve is not just about preserving nature but safeguarding the livelihoods and lives of those who call Inverleigh and Teesdale home.
The time to act is now. We need to prevent a potential disaster before it strikes. Support our call for urgent action by signing this petition to make our community and the precious Inverleigh Common safer for everyone.
