This (and a 20mph speed limit) should have been implemented in 2011 after Eleanor was hit by a car while wearing head to toe hi-viz. Beach Road has many vulnerable pedestrians eg nursery school kids, local primary school kids and vulnerable adults. Absolute no-brainer to do this.
I care about this petition because Littleport is already socio-economically impoverished and there is zero to little upliftment in the area. Cutting bus services even further will only kick Littleport further back into the dark ages.
I am a college student in my first year of my course. I live in an OL10 post code, and attend the manchester college city campus, that is situated in the city centre directly next to victoria station and the AO arena. I have to go to this college as it is the only facility to offer my course at the higher extended diploma level. In order for me to attend my 9 o clock classes, i have to leave the house at 7 o clock. my journey takes 2 HOURS. every day, twice a day, partly due to the distance and indirect travel route, and the shortcomings of the bee network. a tram or train ( or even reinstating the 135 service) would not only better my education but my life and health.
As a disabled student, who already has to travel by train, I rely on the U1 bus to take me from the train station to campus which could be about hour walk. With the current cost of living my student loan does not leave me with enough money to cover the cost of £4 a day to use the bus.
This is a ridiculous change! I already pay £60 a week communting to uni because accommodation costs are too expensive, the free unibus is the best thing about the uni! The busses are shocking with some rather unpleasant drivers and now they want to start charging! Please sign this, something needs to change!
I'm sure many new students will also be reconsidering their places now to make getting to university cheaper, there is already a cost of living crisis and they want to pile this onto students too!
Who thought that £300 annually is going to be feasible for students, more so those who are also paying for accomodation and commuting
It is sad that the very thing that stands UoD out is the very thing they want to take away after paying huge amounts as school fees. This is unfair and shouldn't even be considered for whatsoever reasons. Keep UoD Buses free, we want them to remain free of charge for the sake of the mental health of students.
As a disabled student I rely heavily on the U1 I physically cannot afford to pay the cost of the bus every single day and there’s no chance DSA will cover it!
This is a ridiculous change at the University of Derby, with tuition fees increasing, the cost of food and essentials increasing and other expenses of being a student. Asking students to pay for the unibus is outrageous. Furthermore, this will negatively impact students with disabilities, with many becoming unable to travel to and from their lectures, pairing this alongside the removal of support plan extensions, this feels like an all-out attack on disabled students, as every day the University of Derby excludes them more and more.
Without the buses being free you place many students especially female at risk. I myself used to park at Markeaton during my undergraduate degree and the walk over there at night which was often in the winter months is dark with no lighting between the street as you enter the park on keddlestone road all the way to the entrance to the car park. As many students carry laptops this leads them at greater risk of being attacked and robbed and leaves women vulnerable to being raped. A student should not have to decide between a safe journey to the car park or saving the money for the many other costs that students are faced with whilst at uni. Being safe is just as important as needing food to eat, both ensure the student attends their lectures and graduates with the grades needed to go on to the next journey in their lives.
