I have been playing roller derby, a full-contact sport, with and against trans and gender expansive people for 15 years. The main result is that I’ve become a better athlete and a better person. Trans people belong in sport.
As the husband of a WHAM player and fan in the stands and behind the clock, I see no issue with this.
Level of play - All WHAM players are evaluated for the minimum level they are allowed to play. WHAM also reserves the right to ensure player parity by moving players or teams up as necessary.
Acceptance - Teams are autonomous in determining their own makeup and culture. Likewise, if a player is not comfortable with their team, they can find another one.
So, parity is not an issue. Team choice is not an issue.
As a hockey player myself, those are the two biggest concerns I see. One may also worry about physicality, but hockey is a physical sport. You can get hurt by tripping over the line as easily as someone bigger or smaller or faster or slower than you.
As a fellow Transman we should be able to participate. I grew up playing basketball for years and I was kicked off the team once I came out. I tried for the men’s team and they just called me a liability. Even though this is Hockey but it still makes the same point. We need a place where we can have fun.
I’m a C2 WHAM player and I know hockey is for everyone - trans and non binary players are part of this league and inclusivity needs to be a corner stone of WHAM
Hockey is a genderless sport, everyone should be able to play. As a mother of a trans and nonbinary human, if they wanted to play, I would support them in anyway I could.
I grew up playing hockey in northern Minnesota—the sport changed my life. I believe the women who paved the way for girls hockey teams in high schools, and finally a professional league, fought for inclusion so everyone could play hockey. It disheartens me to see women now fighting to exclude trans players. Hockey is for everyone ❤️ we should strive to open doors not close them.
WHAM created a wonderful community for me when I first started playing hockey. I hope that that it continues to for all women and non-binary folks that want to lace up skates, not just those assigned female at birth. Hockey is for everyone!
My WHAM team includes trans and non-binary players. They are every bit as integral to our team as any other player. Let's be honest, y'all. This is rec league hockey. Nobody is moving up to the PWHL or getting pulled for the Olympics. Hockey is for everyone, and there's a place for all of us.
