As an autistic young adult, I know from personal experience it is hard enough to live in a systemically ableist society. The abuse and neglect described here is utterly inhuman. Ty is my cousin, one of the most kind-hearted people I know, and he is worthy of your respect and care. He is a human being, not a statistic.
This was preventable.
It doesn't take blind trust of either side to do a thorough investigation. No matter what you believe, inhibiting and postponing is not protecting against defamation or playing the victim, it is enabling it. The complete lack of response by the people whose job it is to keep our students safe speaks volumes.
It is not too late to do the right thing. People have already been hurt; that is undeniable and cannot be reversed. But that does NOT mean willfully ignoring the now limited but still very much nonzero action that CAN still be taken to conduct that investigation, take action to prevent further abuse, hold the known abuser(s) accountable, and ensure adequate medical treatment for the victim(s) to the fullest extent possible.
To those who make the decision: whatever you decide, treat this like the future of someone you love depends on it. Because that's exactly what it is to his family. And someday it could be you.
The decision to cut the Minnesota Men’s Gymnastics team and potentially close its training facility is not just a blow to a storied athletic program—it’s a direct attack on the student-athletes who have poured years of dedication into their craft. This team has been a pillar of excellence and community at the University of Minnesota, producing top-tier gymnasts and fostering an environment where students grow both athletically and academically.
What’s even more troubling is that this decision appears to be driven by personal vendettas from the athletic director, who has consistently shown a vindictive disregard for the well-being of the athletes and the program. Rather than supporting these students, his actions seem motivated by petty personal agendas rather than any legitimate concern for the university or its athletes.
The Men’s Gymnastics team and its facility are crucial to the future of the program and the athletes it serves. The administration should rethink this decision and stand behind its students, rather than letting personal animosities destroy something that’s been so valuable to the U of M community.
My nephew is part of the Minnesota Men's Gymnastics team. The University of Minnesota should retain its men’s gymnastics team because it provides critical opportunities for students to engage in physical activity, build leadership skills, and foster a sense of community. Gymnastics promotes discipline, resilience, and teamwork, qualities that align with the university’s commitment to developing well-rounded individuals. Moreover, it is concerning that the administration has not met to discuss this important topic with stakeholders. Decisions affecting student organizations should involve open dialogue and transparency, ensuring that the voices of students and alumni are heard. Eliminating the program without proper discussion undermines trust and diminishes the university’s commitment to its diverse extracurricular offerings.
