We purchased 2 timeshares over the last 35 years and have used them as well as we could. We are winding down our traveling as we age and would prefer to spend time with our grandkids. We feel that Bluegreen sales lied to us stating that we could easily rent our timeshare to pay the maintenance fees. You cannot. We tried to cancel it within a month after buying but it was too late. We’re locked in forever now. We would love to be able to cancel our maintenance fees going forward! Legislation to end the unfair practice of perpetual maintenance fees would help so many people like us. And I’m aware we are some of the lucky ones. Others truly cannot afford the payments, especially after one of those who signed the contract passes way. Legislative relief from this servitude would be life changing for some and a bright light for others.
My husband is stuck in a timeshare with his ex wife. We've been trying to get her name off for years so we can proceed to getting rid of the timeshare. We are a large blended family and can not afford to take vacations in this economy nor afford to keep making payments when we have other expenses and in severe debt. We are unable to just stop paying because his ex-wife name still on it and per divorce decree, have time remain in good standing on it until her name is removed. The timeshare has been a huge financial burden for us.
The whole timeshare system is very illegally tainted from start to finish. Yet, they make it legal by having us to sign things such as "we understand not to believe sales". (quote not exact but means the same thing). Also, it contains this "we understand that we can't sue". I personally know that many have been paid off to keep their mouths shut. I have been reading how timeshares treat individuals for several years. MANY twists of truth and out and out lies are plentiful in order to obtain money from trusting people. I would love to demand that Congress take the necessary steps to force timeshares to treat consumers fairly. For years, it has been basically,, Lie to obtain money and cover themselves with contracts with wording to suit their needs and, to me, they are as bad as mafia. MORE needs to be done than just stop making people pay thousands more dollars before they are legally released. I encourage people to just not pay any more. IT's bad enough that we're ripped off all the way through. They have ZERO intention to treat people right. I have been very distressed over this for years. I was finally lied to big time and along with seeing the whole proceess and how awful so many people are treated, I WILL spend the rest of my life trying to get somebody's attention who will do the right thing. I totally understand that this whole thing is part of the SWAMP in America. I know that legislature knows how it is and yet they do nothing. I understand that all politicians have this underlying urge to protect the big companies who bring in money to the states. BUT, for me, it's all about treating people fairly. I'm 81 and won't keep my mouth shut and stop trying to make a better world.
Timeshares should be same any real estate. Perpetuity contracts are illegal in my view. Additionally they are not explained at time of purchase. Cancellation of contracts should be allowed. Threatening to impact someone's credit because the person cannot pay the fees or no longer or never used the timeshare should be illegal.
Often times the timeshares are sold by pressuring people, inviting them to long presentations without food then feeding them only if they buy a TS. Then there are all the scams taking money from people by promissing them they will get them out of their TS. The whole industry is made of thieves!
Timeshare are illegal and unethical in just not giving all the information upfront when they were sold to people. The perpetual cost and the pass down to surviving family without anything they can do about taking on the debt of taxes and mai tenancy is just plain wrong. Also the fact that the timeshares no longer offer the amount of properties they initially had but still want people to pay and keep increasing is also a violation. Something needs to be done. I don’t want my children to take this on after I’m gone.
I’m a single mother paying for a timeshare I can not use or afford. It’s taking everything I have to keep them at bay. I have called to cancel telling Whydom I can not afford the payment. The lady on the phone laughed at me and said there is nothing we can do about this. I have not used my timeshare in over 5 years. It’s just ridiculous they can’t help or cancel this service.
We so need legislation to make horrific timeshare maintenance fees illegal. I have never even used mine & have continued paying for over 30 years! I need OUT!
I have had my WorkdMark by Wyndham Timeshare for 25+ years.
The maintenance fees have become astronomical. !
I am now in my 70s & on a fixed budget and can no longer afford the maintenance fees.
