Everyone has covered the massive threats to privacy, to mental health, to trans and queer Canadians, etc. But I am also very angry and worried about the move to criminalize, shame, or otherwise scrutinize something as healthy and natural as sexual fantasy and interest in sex. Yes, we need to ensure people are not being exploited and harmed in creating sexual material, but this act seeks to make the EXISTENCE of sexual material suspect, as something suspicious that warrants being on a watch list, which I reject with every fiber of my being. As someone who wants to write steamy romance novels and create games that explore and simulate different kinds of sexual intimacy, I can already feel the chilling effect a bill such as this will have in the creation and sharing of art - because who will feel safe to share their art if it might get labelled "pornographic" and end up with a fine? Vote no on Bill S-209!
