Fernie residents oppose OneBC's hateful rhetoric in the Elk Valley
The Issue
We are expressing our deep concerns over the upcoming meet and greet from 5-8pm at Elks Hall on Wednesday, October 21st, featuring OneBC's AJ Wolfe.
The leader of OneBC, Dallas Brodie, is actively working to challenge and undermine the evidence of children's graves discovered at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. This stance not only disrespects the painful history shared by Indigenous communities but also hampers the progress we have made towards reconciliation, awareness, and healing.
Brodie's proposal to ban land acknowledgements—a small yet significant gesture of respect for Indigenous Peoples territories— is a gut punch to our commitment to equity and justice. Land acknowledgements serve as a reminder of the historical and ongoing injustices faced by Indigenous peoples. To silence them is a failure in recognizing our collective responsibility in making amends.
Equally alarming are efforts to restrict pride flags, remove SOGI 123 (an educational initiative to make schools more inclusive of all sexual orientations and gender identities) from schools completely and repeal the BC Human Rights Code. The pride flag is a symbol of hope, equality, and the ongoing fight against discrimination for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. SOGI-inclusive practices significantly reduces verbal and physical harassment, and social exclusion in schools. Repealing the Human Rights Code, a critical tool that protects countless residents from discrimination, would set us back decades in our pursuit of justice and equality for all citizens of British Columbia.
We cannot stand idly by as these regressive actions are proposed. Our community and our province deserve leaders who understand and embrace the values of diversity, inclusion, and respect.
**Sign this petition to let OneBC leadership know that they are not welcome to promote their harmful initiatives in Fernie**
